What is the discipline imposed on married Latin Rite clergy about abstaining from marital relations before offering or assisting at Mass?

I don’t know. As I recall, priests in the various Eastern rites are required to abstain from marital relations for 24 hours prior to offering the Eucharist, just as the ancient Jewish priests did.

Well, the good news is that we already had a thread on this, and reliable poster 1ke already answered it. Click the link to get her whole answer because the snippet shown is omitting the quotes she responded to, so her answer in the snippet doesn’t make sense.

And the answer is, married priests in the Latin rite don’t need to abstain from sex with their wives before saying Mass.
Obviously given that priests in the Latin rite say Mass daily, this makes sense.

Based on her answer, it appears that not even the Eastern Catholic priests need to abstain from sex with their wives before celebrating liturgy.

Should married Catholic priests have sex with their wives? Moral Theology
Yes. I am not sure who explained this to you in this way, but it is not accurate to say the Church bases its discipline of priestly celibacy on Levite laws or practices. It has nothing to do with temple service. No. Correct. Not a valid analogy. It is not used to explain celibacy as the norm in the Latin Rite. I am not sure where you got this idea.

Reliable poster “me” should not have spoken for the Eastern Rite churches, as I am not positive that is accurate. Latin Rite- no discipline that I know of.
How did you get so reliable? You can set your watch by your posts.

Personal opinion here: What matters is form and matter at the consecration. Beyond that, we have no tangible need of such knowledge. Even Jean Cauvin preached against “impious speculation.”

Just sayin’

I reached out to Fr. Dwight Longenecker regarding this question. I know that many have debated this a lot in regards to be the Permanent Diaconate and the Married Latin Priests. It would be interesting to hear what a married Latin Church priest has to say about this, because historically, married priests in the Catholic Church had to promise to abstain from sexual relations with his wife after ordination. 🧐
