The priest at our parish mentioned a few days ago that he will be leaving our parish to move closer to his family, which he stated included his daughter, son-in-law and grandsons. He also made mention of his wife. I am a bit confused. I was lead to believe that Catholic priests do not marry, so how is this possible? Is there any circumstance that would allow a married priest?

What did he mention about his wife? It is possible that she had died prior to his being ordained. There are many widowers who later were ordained priests.

A less likely possibility is that he may have been a married Eastern Catholic priest or a former protestant clergyman who was ordained under the Pastoral Provision.

I have read about this.
The Church makes an occaisional exceptence if they were married in another Faith like a Vicar of The Church of England Etc.
They can stay married when they convert to being Catholic and a priest, but they are not allowed to be married if they are already Catholic.
It is rare that this happens and is not the normal practice of the Church.

Also, in Easter Rite - (most of us here perhaps Latin Rite), married man can become a priest. When he becomes a priest, and if his wife dies, he cannot remarry. I think the Bishop is not married but I am not sure about that.

It is not unusual for a widower to become a priest. The criteria is that all children be grown and able to care for themselves. These children are often involved in the discernment process.
The Episcopal Church allows for married priests. They may become Catholic priests upon conversion. I do not know the exact steps required when a minister from a different denomination joins the Catholic Church. In any case, they remain married.
The Catholic Church has not always required a celebrate priesthood. Remaining celebrate is considered a discipline.

** I think the Bishop is not married but I am not sure about that.**

**Bishops in Orthodoxy are chosen from among the monks–many of whom are widowers. Many make a pro-forma monastic profession before receiving the Episcopate.

Eastern Catholic bishops must be unmarried, though there is at least one UGCC bishop who is a widower.**

Here in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, we are priveleged to have two new(ish) married priests who were ordained under the pastoral provision. Both are former Episcopalians and one was the bishop for the Rio Grande Diocese of the Episcopal Church. Blessed Be God!!

Are men married in the Catholic Church and later had the marriage annuled then able to be ordained in the Catholic Church?

If you received a decree of nullity, then the Church has declared that the Sacrament of Matrimony never took place. That would necessarily mean that the impediment of marriage does not bar the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

Of course, if the decree of nullity was based on an inability to form a valid bond, that might in itself prohibit taking vows. But that’s a different question . . . .

That would depend on the Diocese or religious order/community.

Some allow men with anullments others do not.

wait it says that you are Protestant next to your name, how come your going to a Catholic church?

What did you mean by this? Thanks.
well I was wondering why a person who is Protestant was going to a Catholic parish. In the upper right hand corner next to kympen’s name it says that he is Protestant.
