Are (newly) married couples who are too old to conceive a baby permitted in the Church to have sexual relations? Or, is sexual relations between married couples reserved for conception only? This can be an important consideration in making a decision to remarry after the death of a spouse.

Infertility is not an impediment to marriage, and married couples are permitted to have sex regardless of how long they’ve been married.

Yes

Yes, married couples of any age may have sexual relations, often referred to as the marital act.

One of the arguments against same sex “marriage” has always been that same sex couples cannot produce children. SSM supporters will counter-argue that senior citizens cannot produce children either, but they are allowed to marry. How is this different?

I have thought the same thing. You have a very good question, and I hope someone will attempt to answers it clearly, and realistically.

Additional note: Based on reports I have heard/read, seniors who do have relations do not “complete” the act due to physical dysfunctions (both male and female). They “improvise”, which is not permitted by the Catholic church.

Yes married Seniors and those who are young, but infertile, can engage in marital relations. Provided the seed is still put only in the wife’s vagina, and isn’t spilled elsewhere.

But wouldn’t most seniors be barred from having relations due to being unable to properly complete the act? Then, that would me that seniors would have to abstain all together.

This is a serious inquiry, and that it the information that I hear about seniors.

The act of sexual intercourse between a man and a woman – assuming no deliberate action has been taken to render procreation impossible – is naturally ordered toward procreation. The fact that sometimes bodies don’t work as designed due to age or other factors, and the fact that the the female body goes through cycles of fertility, do not change the fact that male-female sexual intercourse is designed for procreative purpose.

I found this article on the subject, if it helps: catholic.org/news/hf/family/story.php?id=50864

Married sex between a husband and wife is still a natural married act, even though in the case of the naturally infertile (not willfully sterilized) or elderly will be a naturally infertile act. Sex in marriage is made for “babies AND bonding.” A natural sex act consists of the husbands seed always being planted in the wife’s vagina, regardless of the wife’s fertility status of each cycle. Seed must be planted in the vagina each and every sex act of the married couple, it can never be spilled elsewhere. Even using NFP the seed is still planted in the vagina, just during a naturally infertile time of the month for the wife. Oral sex to completion (involving spilling of seed outside vagina) is a unatural sex act and is not allowed between married couples of opposite genders either. [Note: oral stimulation is allowed between married couples, but the seed must always be planted in the vagina not outside it.]

From even a technical perspective: a homosexual union is not natural. It does not allow the full creative powers of each person to be used to their full potential. Seed is always spilled outside of the vagina in the case of homosexual men, and no seed is involved at all in the case of homosexual women. It is a totally unatural act, just as oral sex is unatural for heterosexual married couples.

You are correct that a senior couple in which one of the parties was incapable of performing the marital act would be unable to marry: catholic.com/blog/trent-horn/why-the-church-cannot-marry-the-impotent

From what I gathered (and correct me fellow Catholics if I’m wrong), as long as an honest attempt is made to place the seed in the vagina (it is not spilled elsewhere, and the husband isn’t “finished off” manually or orally instead) then it is allowed. Even if sperm are no longer produced, the intention was to place the seed inside the vagina. As far as being able to produce an erection, or last a greater length of time inside the wife’s vagina, the Church allows the use of medications (such as Viagra) for this purpose.

ETA: If no erection is able to be produced, even with the use of the best medications and medical treatments, then I believe these individuals (old or young) are unable to marry. It’s a sad, heavy cross to bear I’m sure. 😦 But medical technology is producing more and more aids for these individuals, and we can hope their cross is removed soon. 🙂

Conjugal relations beyond the age of 25 is a mortal sin, although it might move up to ~30 in the near future with better medical care.

I dont know where you got the idea that us Seniors couldn’t compete the act!!

Opposite sex couples are capable of marital sex; same sex couples are not capable of marital sex. There is no sexual complementarity. No marital relations are possible. Infertility is not an impediment to marriage. Permanent and antecedent impotence is.

I don’t think this is accurate to begin with.

Permanent, incurable impotence is an impediment to marriage. Infertility is not. Advanced age does not at all imply impotence.

As a female, who has female friends, after a certain age, it supposedly HURTS way too much to complete the act.

In more blunt language, menopause causes atrophy.

Therefore, these women and their husbands please each other “in other ways.”

(I’m single/celibate, so I wouldn’t know directly!)

My previous post is about women. I also heard many men have difficulties.

And from what I hear, the type of intimacy that senior married couples share is “different.”
