My spouse and I are opposites. He is slow to anger, I am quick tempered. He is an athiest. I am Catholic. I do not compromise. He compromises more than I do. He is liberal. I am conservative. He is a “clown”. I am serious. I am diplomatic. He just blurts it out. I am more social. he is more to himself. I get embarassed easily. he does not. I think he has traits that I wish I had. It is probably talking about stuff and coming to an agreement.

You bet Nathan is my opposite!

I can’t even imagine what it would be like to be married to someone like me!!! Haha.

I am outgoing, loud, opinionated, stir crazy, really driven to the point of overworking often.

He is quiet, funny, outdoorsy, artistic…basically my polar opposite. He is a homebody and has had the same friends since preschool. I love to meet new people. He wants to be a SAHD. I long to climb the corporate ladder.

It works nicely.

I saw the thread title and had to reply. 🙂

Yes, I am definitely married to my opposite! I am very easy going, she is prone to worry. She likes to plan. I like to procrastinate. I like heavy metal music, she likes everything except heavy metal music. I like silly humor (like “The Simpsons” or “Naked Gun”) and she thinks it’s stupid (though she is coming around on that!).

But we agree on all the important stuff. We believe in Jesus and that the Catholic Church is the one true Church. I don’t see how I could have married anyone who did not share those views with me. Everything else just makes life a little more interesting. 😉

Joe - I also couldn’t imagine being with someone who wasn’t Catholic at this point in my life!

I married my opposite and we have been struggling lately. We have been married 20 years and have really been struggling the last 3 years. A friend of mine told me something interesting. He said that when a couple marries at a young age, they usually marry their opposite because they are looking for that exciting new love… But couples who marry when they are older tend to marry someone very similar to them because they are more set in their ways and look for love that is more comfortable and predictable. He said that those who marry their opposite while young tend to have more difficulties later on in their marriage. i guess that my husband and i are finding that to be quite true. Do we wish that we hadn’t married?? Of course not, God called us to marriage and we are committed to work it out—divorce is never an option. Our difficulties are just another way of God calling us to closer relationship with Him and to call upon those sacramental graces of our marriage on a daily basis. i love my husband dearly, but there are times when living with him is a struggle. Love is a decision of the will, not a feeling. If God is calling you to marry this certain person, then follow His will whether or not your personalities meld perfectly together.

I guess DH is my opposite. Or at least, he is different from me. But we have so many of the same goals, ideals, morals, etc that we still end up moving forward together.

I suppose he is messy and I am neat. He is decisive, I am hesitant. He is quiet and willing to back down in a social setting, I tend to escalate it.

I just don’t know if it’s enough to qualify as opposites! We are shoulder to shoulder in all the important things. We could finish each other’s sentences. But then we will argue over whether the dirty clothes should go in the hamper or directly into the laundry room. 🤷

Thanks for your insights. I am glad to hear you don’t regret marrying, and you are committed to work it out.

I guess I am still trying to figure out if this is God’s will for me, ya know? Even as a young person, I tend to prefer the company of those similar to me, so it’s been tough at times dating someone where I feel the two world’s don’t always meld well. We had a rough evening last night where we both were just on two different planets. I will say that me and my boyfriend are not perfect opposites. We do have similarities. But…to sum it up, I am a philosophical girl who’s head seems permanently stuck in the clouds and he is a concrete, practical guy who’s feet seem permanently glued to the ground. We believe the same things but often arrive at those beliefs coming from different paths, and express those beliefs differently (like I would rather have a deep theological discussion - that “fills my tank” and helps me grow - whereas he would rather spend time in the silence of Adoration. Or just doing something fun).

Sometimes, I just want it to be easier. 😦

If you want it to be easier now, then you will really struggle when married for many years. The stresses of life are many and have a way of accentuating our differences. How is your level of respect between the 2 of you as far as your differences? If you do not have a high level of respect for each other now when you are just dating, then that could be a problem later on. I find that over the years our respect has eroded for our different ways of dealing with things. We are slowly building up respect for each other again, but it is one step forward 2 steps backward type of thing. We have been reacting to each other lately instead of responding to each other. God is faithful though and He is healing our relationship. It is easy to let selfishness creep into our lives and erode our relationship.

One thing that holds us together in times of difficulty is that we know beyond doubt that God called us together. We spent much time in prayer before marrying and were given such a peace that this was God’s will for our lives that when times get tough–we hang onto the fact that God will see us through this work that He began in us. Ask God to show you what His will is in your life and ask Him to give you peace about it. If you have nagging thoughts in your mind as you continue to pray–check them out with other people, with your boyfriend, with a priest…keep praying and don’t feel pressured into a relationship that just doesn’t seem to fit. God is faithful and He won’t let you down. Take your time to discern using all the resources you have around you. Prayers being said for you as you contemplate one of the most important decisions you will ever make.

we are all married to our opposites, that’s how it works, they’re them, we’re us
men vs women
always has been
always will be
as time goes by

what would be the fun in marrying someone just like me?

That’s my wife and I to a T! She helps save me from being stuck by my being too concrete and practical and I help pull her back to earth from the clouds. We’re a good balance. Early in our marriage I think it was a bit frustrating for me (and I’m sure for her too), but now I see that our differences are a blessing on our marriage. She’s the salt to my pepper. Doesn’t mean there aren’t days when I wish she could be more practical. I’m sure she’d say likewise about me. But it works! 🙂

I agree opposites attract but so do alikes. We have always been but then I have a low labido. Now we are older the doctor said my husband has used up his thyroid. That is what we do he says. So now I get him going and my personality is a bit more calmed. Or he has slowed down to me anyways it takes us a lot longer to get things done which is fine as long as it gets there. 🙂

Really? I have never met another couple quite like this! It has definitely been a source of frustration for us at times. We both have great affection for the other, but gosh…sometimes I just long for lengthy, deep, philosophical discussions! And I know he wonders where my head is when I do things like lose my debit card or lose track of time! Thing is, when I’ve dated men more like myself, it seems like disaster waiting to happen…I mean talk about a struggle to live in reality!

My current boyfriend and I have discussed breaking up a few times, but each time…the thought of NOT being together is just heartbreaking. We took one break about 10 months ago, and he found he really missed my quirky, Bible-quoting ramblings, and I missed his calm, rational, stability. We’re finally getting to that point though, where marriage is really at the forefront, needing to be discussed, and it’s a bit terrifying as it is such a HUGE decision. It can make the differences feel scary all over again.

Thanks - you are articulating some of our fears, I think. I am seeking counsel, but also just wanted to hear from other Catholics out who are living out marriages that deal with being opposites. One struggle is that, I think more than ever, my generation has fairy-tale expectations of marriage. So I’m trying to get a glimpse of what a truly godly marriage would look like.

Perhaps you should consider visiting this wonderful marriage website and taking one of these quizzes together. Also if you do decide to marry, there is a wonderful tool that is used during the marriage prep called a FOCCUS inventory. Check with your diocese if they use this mechanism. You can find out more about it by going to our diocese’s www.familyministry.org
Thanks. 🙂 The website looks great, and I’d love to do the FOCUS inventory with marriage mentors. I know each couple is different - some marry very similar spouses, and others do not. It’s great to have guidance from those who have “been there.”
