When I was married a couple years ago, we were told the wedding ceremony had to physically take place inside a Catholic Church. My fiancé was deeply disappointed because he wanted a seaside wedding, but we followed the rule given to us. The rule made sense because we wanted a full nuptial mass and it seemed like mass always happens inside churches.
However, I’ve recently been recalling retreats with masses said outdoors on makeshift alters. Is it valid to have a regular mass celebrated outside a physical Catholic Church? If so, why can’t a nuptial mass be celebrated outside a physical Catholic Church?
