Has anyone heard of or been to a service of the Mars Hill Church?

My daughter who left the Catholic Church many years ago when she married is still searching for a church. Her and her family has recently attended services in a building which operates as a restaurant during the week and is called Mars Hill.

I personally have never heard of such a church.

Sounds like just one more independent pop-evangelical wannabee megachurch.

Welcome to CAF.

Do they live in the Asheville, NC area? There is a town called Mars Hill near Asheville.

It sounds like Mars Hill Church has several locations - here is their history marshillchurch.org/about/history … at least that is the Seattle location… not sure about the other Mar Hill Churches. This one began in 1996 by a former Catholic. 😦 What a silly name for a Church? It sounds like a candy bar?

On the home page it listed upcoming topics… one was “Religion Saves - and 9 other Misconceptions” This is typical of the very 20th Centrury American brand of Evangelical Churches where the word religion is looked at in a very negative light. When I clicked on “gospel” from their website it listed all the differences between what “religion” says and what the gospel says. I think the agruments against religion are totally taken out of context. It talks about how religious people trust in their own good works whereas people who follow the gospel trust in Jesus because he alone is good. Well I LOVE my CAtholic religion and I totally trust in in Jesus, and while I think he of course was good, (God is good, all the time) I know many good people … I don’t think that people are all bad - that’s what it says on that website. Anyhow, it’s typical Protestant stuff… just with a “cool” twist to it to make it appealing to a younger crowd I think.

I will pray for your daughter, that she comes back home. I think that she’s still searching for a place to go shows that she hasn’t really found what she’s looking for outside the Chruch?

(Welcome to the forums by the way 🙂 )

I hope she finds her way back to the Real Church. I have to question the theology of anything that is not Catholic or Orthodox. And from what I have found, the newer the religion the further it is from the teaching of the Apostles.

Acts 17:22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Aeropogus (Mars’ hill), and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

**Rely upon God, thy God and the Lord of thy fathers. For the people are wandering in the paths of delusion, bereft of discernment to see God with their own eyes, or hear His Melody with their own ears. Thus have We found them, as thou also dost witness.
Thus have their superstitions become veils between them and their own hearts and kept them from the path of God, the Exalted, the Great.
Be thou assured in thyself that verily, he who turns away from this Beauty hath also turned away from the Messengers of the past and showeth pride towards God from all eternity to all eternity. **(Bahá’ulláh, Tablet of Ahmad, Baha’i Prayers, p. 211)
