I saw here you had a MA thread time ago, but i gess its too old, so i decided to make a new one.

first i got a question, i have not yet found a reasonable answer. what about the “never empty the mind” does it applies to the meditation in martial arts, that many people use without a religious purpose?

also from this I think that if some of us are teachers in martial arts we should seek to make them totally secular, I know that many would like to teach about Christ but reall y not everyone is a Christian and should respect their opinions and desires to learn a MA, withous religion, just like some of us would like them without eastern religion, what do you think about this.

and finally the true purpose of the thread, to speak about martial arts you like aand stuff.

I’m not an expert on this, but as far as I understand, u shouldn’t empty the mind if your intention behind it is to receive some kind of spiritual experience or encounter with God or something, basically like what u find in centering prayer. Now if u are doing it to just relax the body, I think, it should be alright, so long as one doesn’t try to link something spiritual or spiritual ideas to it.

IMO, emptying the mind is something you do before you fill it with something else. You get rid of distractions and then think about useful things. It shouldn’t be an end in itself.

I studied karate for a few years, and it was secular (although our sensei was a devout Christian). I think it’s a useful activity with or without religious overtones. It’s good to have it be secular at a dojo if the dojo is a business, but there’d be nothing wring with discussing Christian ideas in a predominantly Christian martial arts class.

yeah, there is nothing wrong, even if it were a not predominant Christian class, the others should learn to respect the others beliefs (which i think its very necesary today, from what I’ve heard lately), just as we should not be upset if we’ve heard some people talk about Budhism. my only complain would be that they would try to force religion on others.
