My video store had a used CD of the 2003 movie “Martin Luther” on sale for only $5 so I purchased a copy and viewed it this past weekend. Although I would not take the movie as Gospel truth and I know it presented history from a protestant point of view, the acting and dialog was pretty good. I would recommend this movie.

I also think this movie can be a teaching opportunity for us Catholics. For instance, the movie was very proud that Martin Luther translated the bible into the German language and presented it to the Prince of Germany. And in the movie the prince paused and noted that this will separate us (Germany) from Rome. Yes, and when a Frenchman named John Calvin decides to print his version of the Bible, they are separated from Rome and Germany, and when … until we have thousands of “bible-based” denominations all separate from each other.

I’m amazed how every protestant portrayal of Luther makes him out to be a “saint.” You never hear of any of the negative stuff. (I’ve been a protestant all my life but will be Catholic Holy Saturday!!!)

If the movie gives the impression that Martin Luther was the first person to translation the Latin Vulgate in German (and I have no doubt it did), it is pure propaganda. Luther was most decidedly NOT the first person to translate the Bible into German. That is a totally bogus claim, which ought to tell you something about the rest of the claims made for Luther by the film.

I liked this movie because I thought that although it showed the corruption in the Catholic Church - (true) it also showed how truly mentally disturbed Martin Luther was (also true).

I will not see this movie. In my opinion it is just the same to watch Brokeback Mountain. Oh it has good acting…I don’t care.

Wow… I so did not see it as a Brokeback type movie. (glorifying sin?) I actually saw the Martin Luther movie when I first started thinking about becoming Catholic. What I got out of it was that Martin Luther didn’t WANT to start a whole new religion… he wanted to reform the Church and whether it was his pride or other people taking what he started & running with it… I don’t know but the end result wasn’t really his intention IMO. The movie showed people burning Catholic Churches - breaking statues… it was so sad and out of control. Plus, like I said, in the movie, Martin was clearly mentally disturbed.

I’m no history expert - but I wonder if the movie didn’t show a very balanced view of what actually happened? It is my understanding that the Catholic Church was terribly corrupt at that time… I don’t think it’s wrong to acknowledge that, do you?

I really don’t see the connection between the two movies. What I see in the movie “Martin Luther” is that the Lutherans, 500 years after the fact, are still very much invested in a man as their final authority on the Word. We Catholics, on the other hand, rely on an office established by Christ as our final authority. For example, how many Catholics really know Pope Leo’s given birth name? We do not think Pope Leo was a greater man than Martin Luther (although he may have been). We listen to Pope Leo and his successors b/c of their authority which comes from holding the Chair of St. Peter.

I also liked the scene where Martin Luther was talking to some children in a field and the Church bells began tolling and ML looked regretfully over to the Church. ML’s wife interupted him and said their just saying the Angelus. Made me wonder why we don’t hear Church bells tolling today.

I dont know i didnt find the movie to offfensive. Although Martin Luther isnt perfect himself. (Check out what he has said about Muslims) it was still a descent movie that disscussed a hard issue for cathloics to digest dealing with church corruptions indulgencies and other grivances

What did ML say about Muslims? He certainly did not help Christians during the raids on Europe by the Turks. In fact, he actively opposed the Church’s call to defense. In other words, ML went AWOL.

I mean that the movies are alike in that they are both “Hollywood Garbage.” I don’t need to see them to know they are garbage either. Again it is only my minute opinion, and I just wanted to chime in on this thread.
