Martin Luther's CHARACTER?

The media attacks the Catholic Church more than the Protestant Church, or any other religion for that matter, simply because the devil controls this world and he knows the Catholic Church is the Truth and the primary thing between him and total word domination. The devil is smart and cunning enough to go after the juggular, so to speak, of churches.

Now, you don’t like the Douay-Rheims. Interesting.
It has nothing to do with “like” or “dislike.” I’m simply pointing out that translations have theological bias, and sixteenth-century ones more so than modern ones (though the NIV is pretty bad that way among modern translations, and the NRSV muddles the meaning by its use of gender-neutral language).
It, however, translates Romans 3-28 correctly, and doesn’t steal from James Epistle to make Romans ‘more Catholic’.
So? Do you care to address the specific issue I raised?
Luther’s translation was erroneous and intentional
Repeating this, in complete disregard for what Luther actually said about German use of “allein” to denote contrast, accomplishes nothing.

I’m as stubborn as you are. Keep repeating this tired nonsense about Luther’s dishonesty, and I’ll keep shooting it down.
It was not a translational issue for Romans 3:28. It was purely doctrinal for Martin, otherwise James won out.
So now you are claiming that translation of the Bible can be doctrinally neutral? If you believe that, you’re a real-estate agent’s dream. Certainly one can be fairer and more neutral than Luther, and one should be. I’m not defending the translation; I’m pointing out the bankruptcy of the accusation of deliberate dishonesty.

In Christ,

Edwin

As alluded to elsewhere, Luther had psychological problems as a result of being physically abused as a child.
Why would this not equally apply to everyone else in the sixteenth century? Do you have any evidence that the way Luther was treated was unusual for that time and place?

Edwin

“Its more than works, faith, or love alone
Salvation is not 1-D.”

Nicely put. Thinking in 3-D regarding to Faith and Works seems essential to understanding their relationship for Christians.

Faith and Works are like heads and tails of a valuable coin. There’s a word for a coin with only “tails,” or only “heads” --counterfeit! We must embrace both as critcally important; pitting them against each other serves only to confuse.

The “either-or” extremes go absolutely nowhere; trying to work your way into heaven irrespective of faith is just as silly as claiming that once you believe there is nothing more required of you. If you’re stuck on one extreme, just read Scripture with an open mind and heart, and you’ll quickly see, like most of our paradox-laced Christian faith, the two don’t fight, but “dance” with each other.

It has been indicated by someone that when Luther ADDED THE WORD ALONE that it was a translation problem. I beg to differ because St. Paul used the word “alone” (Greek “Monos” from which we get monolyth and which means exclusively, alone or only). I put the question to you that if Paul used the word GR. MONOS which is translated ALONE or ONLY in other places why did he not add the word ALONE, ONLY if it was needed in Romans 3:28… (The translation to German argument doesn’t hold water either).

Instances where Paul uses ONLY or ALONE (Greek word MONOS)

Romans 3:29 - Is God the God of the Jews only (monos)? Is He not the God of the Gentiles also?

Romans 4:12 - And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only (monos) …

Romans 4:23 - Now it was not written for his sake alone (monos)…

Romans 8:23 - And not only (monos) they, but ourselves also…

Romans 9:24 - Even us whom He hath called, not of the Jews only (monos), but also of the Gentiles…

Romans 13:5 - Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

I Cor 15:19 - If in this life alone (monos) we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

II Cor 7: 7 - And not by his (Titus’ see vs. 6) coming only (monos), but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you…

II Cor 8:10 - … not only (monos) to do, but also to be forward a year ago…

II Cor 8:19 - …and not that only (monos), but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us…

II Cor 8:21 - Providing for honest things, not only (monos) in the sight of the Lord but also in the sight of men.

II Cor 9:12 - For the administration of this service not only (monos) supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;

Gal 1:23 - But they (the church of Judea) had heard only (monos) that he (Paul) which persecuted us in times past now preached the faith which once he destroyed.

Gal 3:2 - This only (monos) would I learn of you…

Gal 4:18 - not only (monos) when I am present with you…

Eph 1:21 - …not only (monos) in this world but also in that which is to come

Phil 1:27 - …Only (monos) let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ…

Phil 1:29 - For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only (monos) to suffer for His sake…

Phil 2:12 - Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only (monos) but now much more in my absence…

Phil 2:27 - …but God had mercy on him; and not on him only (monos) but on me also…

I Thes 1:5 - For our gospel came not unto you in word only (monos), but also in power and the Holy Ghost…

I Thes 1:8… not only (monos) in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith… is spread…

I Thes 2:8 - …not the Gospel of God only (monos)…

I Tim 5:13 - and not only (monos) idle, but but tattlers also and busybodies…

There are more but there is a limit to word count…

I am a 2002 convert to Mother Church from Methodist (growing up)/Lutheran (converted when got married) and a few months ago, after letting discouragement get the best of me, I cried out to God and said, “Why didn’t you make this easier for everyone to comprehend?” Instantaneously I was aware of how arrogant my cry was. God is God. He did what needed to be done perfectly. He wouldn’t have been able to do it any other way. It is us humans with our pride and/or baggage (etc.?) that we can’t/won’t see what is so obvious. Please stop and honestly ask yourself (and pray) if you really believe God intended for us all to decide what we think He says is best for us? An overwhelmingly majority of us has and look where we are. Free will is a tremendous gift.

As St. Maximillian Kolbe said:
No one in the world can change TRUTH; what we can and should do is to seek TRUTH and to serve it when we have found it. The real conflict is inner conflict.

It wasn’t the easiest thing to realize what you believed all your life wasn’t the TRUTH, the whole TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH, SO HELP ME GOD!

Yeaahh…that’s why you never hear anything negative in the press about Protestant fundamentalists or evangelicals or about Protestant preachers like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson…their follies are always ignored…yeaahh…

Well, I’m not the only one arguing this with you.

Luther owns up to his dishonesty.

At least, I haven’t bought the Brooklyn Bridge, which I think you have.

Their follies may not be ignored, but that’s about the only negative or derogatory press the Protestants get in this land. Also, why do you think it’s been 46 YEARS since we elected a Catholic for President??? Just a coincidence huh? YEAH RIGHT!

instead of asking ourselves what Luther’s intentions were in adding the word alone, we should ask ourselves was adding the word alone, error or not

So, faith without works gets you to Heaven??? Is faith without works a living faith? If you read ALL of Paul, especially the end of much of what you’re quoting, even Paul makes it clear faith alone is not enough. Read ALL of Paul’s letters please. Don’t pick and choose verses. Paul agrees with James more than you might realize or have been taught. Thanks.
OK, the Paulists aka those saved by faith alone as well as the OSAS crowd can prattle on and on and on… BUT, what they always seem to forget is this: Belief in GOD as a Christian, who declares that the Holy Bible is the inerrant word of GOD…requires that you BELIEVE all that is contained within the BIBLE. You are not permitted to treat Christianity or the believe thereof as a “Burger King” menu where you get to have it your way. Nor are you granted the “luxury” of assigning grades or importance points to different Apostles or writers of different books within the BIBLE. Were they not ALL INSPIRED BY GOD to write what they did. This being the case, are not all of their writings equally as important? You either believe it all, or not at all. To not accept all, is to deny GOD, and thus condemn yourself to hell.

Its simple enough…where faith is concerned…without the “works” to prove the faith is real… YOU’RE DEAD faithwise. Accept it, and move on. Get over it.

Luther, having been an Augustine monk…with a bone to pick with the Bishop, had a lot of things on his mind, a mind which by many accounts was a tortured mind. Some have said they thought he was “crazy” as in demented. His father had nearly beaten him to death when he was young…

I think he was a bit of a “flake”. He wrote one thing, then wrote it differently later…seemed to change his mind about alot of things.

I think that, based having lived in Germany for 7 years, his excuse for injecting “colloquial” German into a translation…based on how he thought “common Germans” spoke is malarkey. First of all, he would not have translated anything into low German. Not a chance. Everything would have been done in “Hoch Deutsch”. It is the literal and technical language of Germany, and it would have been Luther’s mother tongue as an educated person. He was simply making “excuses” for injecting “his own personal” interpretations into the Bible…as if they were a part of the original. And considering that Ancient Greek, Latin and Aramic aren’t exactly his “first languages”…

I think he was a flake, but then I think Calvin was too.

Yes, of course it was.
I am certainly not convinced that Luther’s linguistic argument was correct. It does sound very convenient. But I don’t know enough about sixteenth-century colloquial German to be sure. I’d like to have a look at those other German translations that were around in the 16th century, but they aren’t as easy to find as Luther’s!

Edwin

No “sliding” involved at all. I never said I agreed with Luther’s translation–I have repeatedly pointed this out.

You seem to consider it “sliding” if I try to express myself with nuancedrather than making some kind of simplistic black-and-white claim. Sorry, but I’m trying to be as truthful as possible, and I really don’t care if this bothers you or confuses you. Maybe you need to be confused.

No bother, no confusion. I can live within the boundaries of this forum. Black and white is not as simplistic as you believe. You ought to try it. Charity and truth go hand in hand.

Just what Catholic are you proposing should have been elected in this country since JFK absent “blatant” prejudice on the part of the media and public? Let’s hear names.

I think the main reason there hasn’t been a Catholic president since Kennedy is that Northeasterners generally have lost much of their political clout. The only Northeasterner to be elected president since Kennedy was George H.W. Bush, and his earlier political career was based in Texas so he doesn’t really count. Because the Northeast is much more liberal than the rest of the country, candidates from there tend not to do too well in general elections. I think Giuliani stands a much better chance than many others precisely because he’s a Republican–if he gets the nomination, he could pull in a lot of Northeasterners who wouldn’t normally vote Republican.

Edwin

apparently I hit a nerve. sorry. I think I would rather have Martin Luther giving me communion than a known pedophile priest and that goes double for my son.
Bankerhead was a little inaccurate: There are twice as many pedophiles in non-Catholic “churches” (ecclessial communities as the One Church calls them) than in the Catholic Church. I have gotten this info not only from one reliable source but TWO.

I can’t recall what those sources were off the top of my head but i know they were reliable because that’s the only kind of information i read… I don’t waste my time on trash publications…

Besides, it makes total sense - If you believe you’re saved no matter what u do anyway, as many Protestants believe & as Luther taught, why not just do “whatever”… even molest a child… 😦
If a priest molests a child, he should be de-frocked, in my opinion (don’t know if that is what the Church officially says or what…). However, there are a lot of false priests out there. Masons often become priests just to infiltrate and liberalize the Church, get it to be more to their liking… I believe most pedophile priests are actually Masons… In any case, they constitute less than 2% of the priesthood, so maybe it is time we began to focus on the other 98%? ? Do you think??
God bless…
