Marxism and Catholicism

Simple enough. Can one be a Marxist (Political left: social democrat, socialist, communist, etc.) AND a faithful Catholic who believes in every article of the Faith? Are there any points of conflict? Does the same apply for any other ideology?

You can be a Catholic Communist but it is contradictory to be a Catholic Marxist. Marxism is based on atheism, because it believes that religion is a by-product of Capitalism to keep the poor unaware of their suffering.

You can certainly be on the political left and be a Catholic. Anyone who says you have to be on the political Right to be a Catholic are lying to you. The Church is not a political institution.

Catholicism and Communism are incompatible.
You cannot be a Catholic and a Communist.

Yes you can, because there are different forms of Communism. When the Catechism speaks of “Communism”, it is speaking about Marxist Communism; the kind of Communism that the Western world confronted. The kind of Communism that declares “religion is the opium of the people” (Contribution to the Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right, Karl Marx).

That said, it is also worthy to note that one can be on the left-side of the political spectrum (e.g. social democracy, “Third Way”, etc) and still be Catholic.

This is incorrect. Communism is also contradictory.

From QUOD APOSTOLICI MUNERIS:

Mis information. The left today stands for pro choice abortion on demand, homosexuality, and of course coveting thy neighbors wealth.

Add it up its not compatible with Catholicism.

According to two very recent statements coming out of the Vatican (the first calling for a global financial oversite agency, the second–in the Pope’s remarks a few days ago–calling for wealth redistribution).

Both of these statements orgininated in the Justice and Peace Office (or bureau, or whatever it is). None the less: this is from the Vatican.

I keep telling myself that Pope Benedict is old, and these things are being said without his knowledge, or that he has incomplete knowledge of what’s being said in the name of the Roman Catholic Church.

Our last Pope understood Communism very well.
