Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today is the beginning of “Ordinary Time” in the Church’s Liturgical Year. The Easter Season ends with Pentecost. For those unfamiliar with the seasons of the Liturgical Year, here is a brief outline:

Dec. 1, 2013 – Jan. 12, 2014 - Advent, Christmas

Jan. 13 – March 4, 2014 - Weeks 1 to 8, Ordinary Time

March 5 – June 8, 2014 - Lent, Triduum, Easter

June 9 – Nov. 29, 2014 - Weeks 10 to 34, Ordinary Time

Nov. 30, 2014 – Jan. 11, 2015 - Advent, Christmas

Over the last several months I’ve tried to post some thoughts on our Mother Mary, during the seasons of Advent, Lent, Easter, and also on specific Feasts like Pentecost. This morning, I was thinking how appropriate to consider Mary in the “Ordinary Time”. The vestments are green during these days and someone told me green signifies growth. When I was in Catholic Elementary School I think I was taught green symbolized hope but both are similar concepts. (Today is also the Feast of St. Ephrem, Deacon and Doctor of the Church so the vestments are white, but if there is no special Feast the vestments are green in Ordinary Time).

Mary is very much a Mother of Hope by her example, and her prayers for our spiritual growth. As we continue to “Behold our Mother” in the light of Pentecost yesterday and look forward to this coming Feast of Trinity Sunday, may she intercede for us that we may become the saints we are called to be! As Mary did, may we do all the “ordinary” duties of our sate in life, with extraordinary love. May we listen attentively to the Word of God, and be docile to His Holy Spirit as He brings us into His Complete Truth. May each day find us learning as Mary did to share God’s Love with others.

And of course in Ordinary Time is the venerable tradition of celebrating the optional memorial to Mary in the Liturgy on Saturdays when there is no other feast or memorial. This coming Saturday is one such day. This memorial applies to both the Liturgy of the Hours (for Vigils aka Office of Readings, and Lauds) and Mass.

Dear OraLabora,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, of course, there is the option of celebrating memorial Masses in honor or Our Lady when there is no other feast or memorial. Thanks for the reminder 🙂
