I saw this comment posted on Facebook:

The devil would have us all believe that he is the opposite of God. But that is a lie. He is the opposite of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also a created creature, but one who is sinless and full of humility, instead of sinful and full of pride.

I responded:

I have to disagree with this. Satan is an angel, a fallen angel but still an angel. They are a higher order of creation than man. For one thing they are spirit and not flesh. Speaking of Jesus the author of Hebrews writes “For a short while you have made him less than the angels;” (Heb 2:7). Since the context is the incarnation, the writer, inspired by the Holy Spirit, places humanity at a level lower than the angels.

I’d like to hear from others about this.

I agree with your explanation, Satan is the opposite of Michael (or any of the messengers who stand before God).

While Satan (once Lucifer) was an archangel on par with Michael, and Michael certainly has a large role in defeating his purposes, Genesis 3:15 makes it clear that the seed of Eve would be the enemy of the devil. That seed is both Mary and Jesus. Mary because of her fiat as the Second Eve and Jesus, of course, as the God-man who redeemed us and saves us. So, to say that Mary stands in opposition to Satan is correct.

I think you misread his comment. He didn’t say anything about Mary opposing Satan. He spoke of Satan as being the opposite of Mary rather than Jesus because they are both created beings.

Well, they are both created beings. And they are opposite from one another in that Satan is the deceiver and the “father of lies” while Mary embodies all the virtues and is the Mother of God. He’s not off in his comparison. Now, if he had said that Satan is opposite Jesus because they are both created beings, then he would be wrong.
