Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The Feast of “Corpus Christi” ( see HERE ) will soon be celebrated in Rome and all over the world in some parishes on the same Thursday, or in other parishes on this Sunday.
I’ve been pondering the relationship of Mary to this Feast and how beautiful it is! How beautiful it is to ponder God’s amazing work of Love in giving His Only Son, The Word made Flesh, by the Power of the Holy Spirit, in Mary’s womb.
What a wondrous mystery! We can never plumb the depths of God’s Love and the Humility of the Heart of Jesus, but in Mary we see a simple and humble human person who came closer to Him than anyone ever could. It is no wonder to me that Jesus dying on the cross, said to Mary and to John: “…Woman, behold your son… Son, behold your Mother…”
Mary’s “Yes” to the Incarnation, reached a new and more heroic “Yes” on Calvary as she accepted the universal motherhood of the Mystical Body of Christ. Jesus knew that His Church, His Mystical Body has Him as their Head but human members who would struggle against evil needed also a human Mother to nurture them and so He gave us to Mary, addressing her as “Woman” as God had promised her in the book of Genesis. Mary had learned from Jesus and she would help all the children of God to learn Jesus too.
Mary’s “hidden life” with Jesus continues as she is spiritually present to His Body the Church. The reason Jesus is not better known in this world St. Louis de Montfort wrote, is that Mary is not better known. While we celebrate the Eucharistic Presence of Jesus and thank God for giving us His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Blessed Sacrament, let us thank Him also for the gift of Mary as our Mother.
Mary remains His humble Handmaid even as she reigns in heaven as His Queen Mother. She is ever the same beautiful Woman who gave Him birth in Bethlehem, fulfilling the words of Genesis, and Mary continues to cooperate with His Holy Spirit in bringing us to birth in Baptism. The Life of Jesus began through Mary and continues to come to us through her, by the power of the Holy Spirit. God nourishes us through her in our reception of all the sacraments and most fully through the Holy Eucharist we receive at Mass.
This Feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus, by God’s Grace, and the intercession of Mary, may we receive Him as she did with all the love and gratitude our hearts can offer Him.
“O Jesus, living in Mary, come and live in your servants, in the spirit of holiness, in the fullness of your power, in the perfection of your ways, in the truth of your virtues, in the communion of your mysteries. Rule over every adverse power, in your Spirit, for the glory of the Father. Amen.” —prayer of Fr. Jean Jacques Olier, S.S. (1608-1657)
