Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This Sunday, God willing, we’ll be celebrating Trinity Sunday. This year, I’m mindful of the 100th Anniversary of Mary’s apparitions at Fatima, and this morning I remembered that the Angel of Portugal appeared to the children three times, before Mary’s apparitions to them. In the Third Apparition, the Angel prayed with them, this prayer:
Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which He is offended. And by the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.
In comparing the apparitions of the Angel with the apparitions of Our Lady, Lucia later said:
I don’t know why, but the apparitions of our Lady produced in us effects quite different from the angel’s visitations We felt in both instances the same intimate happiness, peace and joy, but instead of the physical prostration the angel imposed, our Lady brought a feeling of expansion and freedom; and instead of this annihilation in the divine presence, we wished only to exult in our joy. There was no difficulty of speech when our Lady appeared; there was rather on my part a desire to communicate.
The ewtn site from which I copied the information offered the following commentary on Lucia’s words:
This difference can perhaps be explained in this way. The angels of whatever choir share in common with God a spiritual nature, unmixed with matter. The goodness of their being, filled with the divine justice according to the degree of glory granted to each, radiates that holiness unmediated, though proportioned to the capacity of human beings to experience it. Not without reason Scripture shows how easily an angel appearing to men can be confused with God Himself (Rev 19:10, 22:9). When our Lady appears, however, although her glory is greater than that of the highest seraphim her human nature cloaks that glory in the familiar, just as did Our Lord’s human nature, even after the Resurrection.

Dear sister,

I thank God that we have Mary to mediate Jesus Christ, our God, to us. It is so easy to get lost in the desires and worries of this world.

Mary raises our eyes to Jesus Christ and the whole Trinity, and shows us a beauty and happiness we never could have imagined without the graces that come to us from the Trinity through her.

Thanks for your reply, dear brother Pat,

Yes, how important to hear from Lucia this beautiful testimony of closeness to Our Blessed Mother – and I believe God intends that same closeness for all His children. It is a mystery of Grace – some simply seem not to see by faith, how God’s Mercy is in His gift of Mary to us.

Jesus’ words from the Cross “Behold your Mother” continue to echo down through the ages for all of us to hear and to obey – even as Mary obeys His words to her: “Woman, behold your son”. She loves each one of us and cares for us as she cared for Jesus.

Let us continue to pray that more will come to know and love Mary our Mother more, for as she said to the three shepherd children in her first apparition:
Please don’t be afraid of me, I’m not going to harm you.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen

Dear sister,

Pope Pius 9th wrote that Mary is as near to God as is possible for a created being. In other words, God is Infinitely Powerful and Merciful, yet is not able to exalt a creature more than he has exalted Mary.

And he did this so that we could be united to Him through her, the Mother of God.

So we can never understand how much she loves the least human person, no matter what they have done.

Thanks also for your loving devotion to the Trinity through Mary – only God can love us more than she does 🙂
