Mary as mediator, advocate, or both?

I’m giving a presentation (very) soon for my apologetics group on the role of Mary: Have Christians always understood Mary to be a mediator, advocate, or both? I’m having a difficult time finding information. Does anyone have some ideas, especially from Church Councils, Fathers, etc?

The terms mediator and advocate are basically synonymous.

Advocate: one that pleads the cause of another.

Mediator: one that mediates between parties at variance
