fuzzy,
To start off, this is probably a good time to note that Catholicism does not derive its doctrines from Scripture, but rather, Scripture (at least, the New Testament) grew out of Catholicism. So while much of Catholic teaching is explicitly supported in Scripture, and much more is implicitly supported, we do not hold that “if it is not in Scripture, it is not true”. Especially when that really translates to “if I don’t find it in Scripture, it is not true”.
But to your point - what is prayer for others, really? It is an expression of love, of caring about another and of desiring what is truly good for them. We do this on earth. God obviously does it. So why would those not in heaven do it? Why would those not in heaven care about those on earth and desire what is truly good for them?
To put it bluntly, why would those in heaven be less Godly than those on earth? Why would they care less about the second great commandment than we do? Surely they fulfill both of the great commandments pefectly, yes?
So can we agree on that, at least?
