I’m sure that this is on the wrong forum… 😦

1 - I know that blaspheming the holy spirit is the unforgivable sin but how is it done?

2 - How does some one become a saint? I mean how do you know if you can pray to them or not?

3 - Also - Mary died as a virgin!? I was told that she had kids with Joseph after Christ was born? …the bible says that Christ had brothers and the bible says that “Joseph did not have sexual intercourse with the woman until the baby was born”.

I just have no info on these subjects, so please fill me in. I haven’t been taught about them yet.

1 - Blasphamy against the Holy Spirit is seen as “final dispair”. Basically, a person who rejects God’s mercy because he/she believes their sin is greater than God mercy, and dies in that denial, is guilty of Blasphamy against the Holy Spirit.

2- A person becomes a saint when that person reaches heaven. The Church has a complex “canonization” process for recognizing some of those people who we know are in heaven right now.

3- Mary was a virgin before, during, and after the birth of Jesus; it is an article of Catholic faith that she and Joseph had no children. There are a number of different explanations for who the “brothers of the Lord” are. One is that they could be cousins because, based on the ambiguity of the greek word at the time, cousin is a possiblity. (Not anymore, though, now althelfos means only and literally “brother”). Another thought is that they could have been Joseph’s by a previous marriage. The Protoevangelium of James (an apocriphal work) is in favor of the later, and St. Jerome is in favor of the former.

I would suggest reading some of the OP’s previous posts and threads before getting involved. She doesn’t really seem to be a serious inquirer.

**I will concern myself with this question only.

In Matthew 1:25, the particle “eos” (“until”) is also used in Matthew 28:20. “Lo, I am with you always, even EOS/UNTIL the end of the world.”

If EOS in Matthew 1:25 means that Joseph and Mary had marital relations, then EOS in Matthew 28:20 means that at the end of the world, Jesus will no longer be with us.

Next, you’ve misquoted the verse.

It says “knew her not EOS/UNTIL she had brought forth her first-born son.”

“First-born son” (FBS) has a technical meaning in Judaism even today.

The FBS is subject to the Law of Redemption. In modern Jewish practice, the father gives five silver dollars to a Cohen (priestly descendant of Aaron), who says the appropriate prayers, and then gives the money to charity.

But not every initial male child is considered a FBS.

If a Jewish woman has a daughter, and then the second child is a boy, this is NOT considered the FBS and therefore is not subject to being redeemed.

If her first pregnancy terminates in an abortion, stillbirth, or miscarriage, then she has a live boy, this, too, is not considered her FBS.

If and ONLY if a Jewish woman’s first pregnancy results in the LIVE birth of a MALE child–THEN this is considered her FBS.

As you see, FBS by no means implies that that a woman ever has any other children.

Remember, Matthew is the most Jewish of the Four Gospels.**

Also, when you asked how do we know to pray to the Saints… Catholics also believe in praying for the dead. I dont know if you’ve learned about that either. But that is something methodists wouldnt have done.

With the brother and sister thing, the fact that these people are cousins is from a greek word, which has no translation different from cousin to brother. He also could have meant “brothers and sisters” as in a large group of people. ANYWAYS. lol. In my scripture study im doing Galatians by Jeff Cavins. James is brought up at being Jesus’s brother and he also defends that he is just his cousin… The reason I brought this up is because Jeff Cavins also was protestant prior to becoming Catholic, so if he is saying it, and Scott Hahn is saying it… There must be TRUE evidence somewhere!

Plus, I’m not 100% sure about this… But didnt Joseph die when Jesus was pretty young. (If this is the case then maybe Joseph was a lot older then Mary, and he did have children before. OR if he died when Jesus was really young, how could Mary and Joseph have children).

There are also people who believe maybe Mary and Joseph were never married (in the bible it doesnt talk about Marriage nor does it talk about Mary being a widow (I dont think), so if Joseph was just there to protect Jesus and Mary, maybe that was his only intention.

AND.
We also believe in Mary’s Assumption (Body and Soul went to heaven)

AND
The Immaculate Conception (Mary was born without sin and never sinned)

Those are comments made by two popes infalliably, mostly because of looking at evidence from the fore-fathers… and also Mary’s apparations are Lourdes and Fatima (you might want to look these up) At first it may be really hard to believe this… but what helped me is that one of the children from Fatima, and Bernedatte, both of their bodies were incortiable (sp?) when someone dug them up… Meaning that there bodies never decomposed naturally, and no smell came from their coffin’s. SO with that evidence, there must be a reason why this happens.
Also there are more scripture references about these two topics on this link:

Thank you everyone for your answers, this is fantastic. I heard about the imaculate conception of Mary but my methodist church doesn’t teach this so I had to get answers here. Thanks again, you have hepled me a lot.

Thank you for your answers for me judechild, but there is still something about this that I don’t understand;
I mean how do you know if you can pray to them or not?
I still don’t understand this part, how is it that we can pray to, for example; Saint. Antony? There is a statue of this man called Saint. Antony holding the baby Jesus. People go and light candles for him and say a prayer. My point is this, how do we know that we can pray to him? I really don’t get it?

My Methodist church taught me that we should pray to no one other than to God him self. But I no longer believe this. I say the “Hail Mary” and “Hail Holy Queen” (basically, i have a rosary and even that is against my methodist doctrine!). My ministers said that it is not biblical practice, ect…

What I’m trying to understand is how are we sure that God says that we can pray to saints? Is there a scripture for it? Can you show it to me at all? Thanks.

it says in the Bible that we are surrounded by the cloud of witnesses… (and lists people who have died). The Holy Spirit unites us all… so we can pray to the Saints and ask them for prayers 🙂 and remember, ultimately ALL prayers go to God, and He decides how they’re answered.

Also, regarding the mention of the “brothers and sisters of Jesus”…

Matthew 1 earlier refers to “Judah and his brothers”. Yet they actually had 4 mothers among them!

You will find such forumlae in the Gospels as “mother of James and Joses” or “mother of the sons of Zebedee”.

But only “Mary the mother of Jesus”–not “Jesus and his brothers.”

Think about it.

Who gave the Methodist church, founded by a quasi-schismatic Anglican, the authority to interpret Scripture? That is the question: authority. The Methodists, Anglican, Lutherans, you-name-it were all founded by men who either rebelled directly against the Catholic Church or against group that already rebelled against Catholicism.

Furthermore, the entire idea of Sola Scriptura (Scripture being the sole basic for Christian practice, doctrine, etc.) is an invention of Martin Luther. It should be noted that even that the founder of the Methodist church, John Wesley, was not a Sola Scripturist, but more a Prima Scripturist.

This is a good enough explanation for me, thank you monica! 😃

There’s a Rosary book FIVE FOR SORROW, TEN FOR JOY by a Methodist minister. (Not to be confused with Rumer Godden’s novel of the same title.)

According to tradtion, he was crucified upside down (like his brother Peter) but on an X-shaped cross (whence St. Andrew’s Cross) somewhere in Asia Minor.

What happened to Mary? (Christs’ mother, not Mary Magdelin)
