“I saw the Mother of God, with her breast bared and pierced with a sword. She was shedding bitter tears and shielding us against God’s terrible punishment. God wants to inflict terrible punishment on us, but He cannot because the Mother of God is shielding us”- st Faustina

So she can control Him? Or is it that He knew from eternity that He would have to punish ( out for us) us for our sins but would only “stop Himself” if Mary prayed for us?

Mary of agreda’s book city if god explains Mary’s unique and powerful role as intersessor.

It is the merits of our lady that please god and are so much more meritorious then all our faults is what I understand. This was all in god’s plan a plan to save mankind. God is generous!

From La Salette (1846) (approved 1851)–
“If my people do not wish to submit themselves, I am forced to let go of the hand of my Son. It is so heavy and weighs me down so much I can no longer keep hold of it.
“I have suffered all of the time for the rest of you! If I do not wish my Son to abandon you, I must take it upon myself to pray for this continually. And the rest of you think little of this. In vain you will pray, in vain you will act, and you will never be able to make up for the trouble I have taken over for the rest of you.
She can intercede, but it seems only to a point, and it’s not necessarily easy.

One of the first things Mary of Agreda addresses is how God perceives things-- all at once, in one indivisible, instantaneous act, versus the way we do. There is no “before” or “after” with God, which makes sense, because God is outside of time. So our perception, as created beings, of the order of things is different from God’s perception.

I think we can go to the Bible to answer that question.

In Exodus 32:7-14, the passage is too long to quote here, but it basically tells the following story: after the Israelites worshiped the golden calf, God told Moses to leave Him so that He could destroy the Israelites through His wrath. But Moses didn’t leave, he stood before God and pleaded with Him not to destroy the Israelites. Verse 14 is critical: “And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do to his people.”

In a certain sense, I think it is true to say that Moses placated God in this passage, and if Moses could do it Mary could. On the other hand, I’ve always heard that, in another sense, this is metaphorical. God only seemed to change His mind, but in reality He just knew in advance what was going to happen. In that light, I think it is true to say that neither Mary nor Moses can placate God except metaphorically.

Perhaps I’m being confusing. To summarize, the Bible teaches that in one sense humans (including Mary) can placate God’s wrath by praying hard. (At least, that’s how I read it.) But in another sense, I think our prayers do not actually placate God, but rather our prayers work as part of His plan. But the Bible helps show us that, at least in the former sense, God can be placated, and if Moses could do it, Mary could do it.

I hope that helps. God bless!

Thank you dmar and yes it does help me understand. Your explanation goes with what I believe:I believe that the answers to our prayers are already “there” in His will for us. I see our prayers as “keys” that “unlock” those answers. The same with sin. The punishments are already there but it’s our sins that “unlock” those punishments, since God doesn’t say just randomly change His mind . Thanks to all who answered too 🙂

We can start from the father of our faith Abraham.
Listen to how he intercedes for the people of Sodom
Genesis Chapter 18
18:22 And they turned themselves from there, and they went toward Sodom. Yet in truth, Abraham still stood in the sight of the Lord.
18:23 And as they drew near, he said: “Will you destroy the just with the impious?
18:24 If there were fifty of the just in the city, will they perish with the rest? And will you not spare that place for the sake of fifty of the just, if they were in it?
18:25 Far be it from you to do this thing, and to kill the just with the impious, and for the just to be treated like the impious. No, this is not like you. You judge all the earth; you would never make such a judgment.”
18:26 And the Lord said to him, “If I find in Sodom fifty of the just in the midst of the city, I will release the entire place because of them.”
18:27 And Abraham responded by saying: “Since now I have begun, I will speak to my Lord, though I am dust and ashes.
18:28 What if there were five less than fifty of the just? Would you, despite the forty-five, eliminate the entire city?” And he said, “I will not eliminate it, if I find forty-five there.”
18:29 And again he said to him, “But if forty were found there, what would you do?” He said, “I will not strike, for the sake of the forty.”
18:30 “I ask you,” he said, “not to be angry, Lord, if I speak. What if thirty were found there?” He responded, “I will not act, if I find thirty there.”
18:31 “Since now I have begun,” he said, “I will speak to my Lord. What if twenty were found there?” He said, “I will not put to death, for the sake of the twenty.”
18:32 “I beg you,” he said, “not to be angry, Lord, if I speak yet once more. What if ten were found there?” And he said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”
18:33 And the Lord departed, after he had ceased speaking to Abraham, who then returned to his place.
And from then on, we see humans pleading with GOD and HE acquiesced to their petitions.
How much more will HE listen to Mary, the mother of the SON of GOD?

Well then St Faustina is a suspect source. Mary cannot “control” God, she is just a human. In fact I find this quote extremely disrespectful. God is not some raging angry bull that needs to be controlled. Nor is it her role to “shield” us. God the Father forgives us because of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. God himself devised this plan of salvation after all.

What do you think of the following argument?
  1. Exodus 32:7-14 shows Moses shielding people from God’s anger.
  2. If Moses can do it then Mary can do it.
  3. Therefore, Mary can shield people from God’s anger.
Do you think that is a valid, logical argument? If not, which premise is flawed, or what fallacy does it commit? Because I think that argument shows, straight from the Bible, that at least in some sense good people can placate God’s wrath by their prayers for other people.

1.) Moses was not shielding anyone. In 14 it says “…the Lord relented…”. Shielding suggests that God acted and Moses stopped Him! To interpret it as Moses ‘shielding’ is to ignore God’s omnipotence, His wisdom, His insight, His love. It reduces Him to an angry heathen God, rather than a supreme and loving creator. Sometimes God listens to our requests and at other times not. Even Jesus himself had a prayer that was not answered, when He asked that the cup might be taken from Him… When I asked God why He did not answer my prayers, I got Hebrews 5:7-8 in answer - the point was that even Christ had requests that were not answered! God is the ultimate authority.
2.) I wouldn’t equate Mary with Moses. Moses was called to guide and lead God’s people and to represent them at that time in history. Mary was not called to lead or represent. She was simply blessed with the honour of being the human mother of our Lord’s earthly form as a man. He existed before she even gave birth to His human form. He existed before her in time. She is His creation at the end of the day. She was blessed, it was a great honour for her, but that does not equal power or leadership.
3.) Doesn’t follow if the two premises are wrong.

All the saints can intercede, especially the Mother of God.

Punishment is for our good, and is not needed if Poland “will be obedient to My will”, the words of Jesus:

1732 As I was praying for Poland, I heard the words: I bear a special love for Poland, and if she will be obedient to My will, I will exalt her in might and holiness.

This is a recurrent meme in the protestant mind, somehow when a human appears to DO something involving his/her fellow humans and GOD, this represent POWER and Leadership.
How far they are from the truth that GOD is pleased to allow humans to intercede for their fellow men.
They misunderstand that first of miracles, the change of water into wine at the wedding at Cana.
Who is interceding for the groom’s relatives?
What are her words to the servants?

Jesus started HIS ministry on earth at this event. By His assent at His mother’s request HE declared to the world WHO He was in reality.
All power on Heaven and Earth has been given to HIM.
And yet HE told His Disciples that THEY would accomplish greater feats!
Well how can this be? Unless HE allows or shares HIS power to be used by His Disciples?

This is the true teaching of the Catholic Church. Nothing is accomplished but by GOD’s will. All Power and Glory belongs to HIM.
Can Mary Shield the Human race from the DESERVED destruction we DO merit?
Probably yes!
With the holocaust we have inflicted on the unborn and born alike, hundreds of millions of death in our hands. No generation since Adam and Eve so deserved to be annihilated than this one. Yet we have not. Ask Mary to plead with GOD to give us another chance.
Pray for a conversion of heart to GOD for the atheists, agnostics, murderers, unfaithful politicians, etc.
