I see absolutely nothing wrong with this song at all, much less anti-Catholic. I would think it would be considered to be very beautiful and touching. I just heard it and listened to it the other night, and thought of how powerful it is. They are probably meant to be taken as rhetorical questions, questions that don’t need an answer really.

I don’t like the song and didn’t as a Protestant. It seems to me a perfect example of a song designed to claw at emotions. I think you could even say it reflects a serious problem with modern Protestantism: there are lots of questions and very few answers. Some might think I’m going too far. But in my experience without an authority the great diversity of opinions leads to a theology, even in song, that doesn’t assert much or at least that isn’t deep.

I get your point, but alcohol is necessary. We need wine for Mass! I say that only half joking because the topic being a Protestant song many will not celebrate with even their form of communion.

I am sure you know that I am referring to booze and not sacramental wine. LOL.

Have never hear of it. I did Google it. I even looked at the Wikipedia page, and while I’m familiar with the some of the artists who recorded this song (actually, only three of them – Donny Osmond, Kathy Mattea, and Reba McEntire), I would be really hard-pressed to identify any of the others who recorded it.

Pentantonix? Who are they? Cee-Lo? The “Forget You” guy? Where are people hearing this song? On the radio? Sirus/XM? Spotify?

Is this supposed to be a controversy?

I get bugged every year to sing this song by the kids.

I don’t know any kids, or even any adult (for that matter), who know anything about a song called “Mary, Did You Know”? Is this a War on Christmas-style, manufactured-controversy designed to sell headlines, or is there an actual likelihood of having heard this song in a church (Catholic or Protestant) or on the radio (terrestrial AM/FM or Sirius/XM) or online (Facebook, Spotify, Youtube?)

Most of us have probably heard it on K-Love, a radio station that plays contemporary Christian music. As stated earlier, some people think the words are not in line with Catholic teaching, possibly even a slam against Catholic beliefs about Mary.

If you don’t know anything about it, then this thread probably doesn’t hold much interest for you

There are at least two radio stations in my town that switch to Christmas music after thanksgiving. One is similar to klove it is a Christian station, the other is a soft rock station. Both play it using several artists version.

Music and art always has the potential for controversy. For my part, I think it important that we at least know what we believe and if we sing or listen to something because we like it, that we be aware of the errors inherent in it. It is a beautiful and really popular song. Consider the analogy of the movie* Jesus Christ, Superstar*. One may look at the movie and the music as good and pleasing, but it is wise to know where it departs from truth.

I know who Natalie Cole is – I know who Lemmy from Motorhead is – I know who Kacey Musgraves is (one of my favorite albums of 2015). But “Mary, Did You Know?” Nope, that one’s just a …whoosh… over my head.

“Popular” as in “of the people” – as opposed to classical or art music (e.g., choral, symphonic, opera, etc.).

Personally, I don’t know who Lemmy is, or who/what Motorhead is. I also don’t have a clue about Kacey Musgraves. So if someone on CAF posted a thread about any of their music, I’d just pass it over.

So why do you keep coming back to ask why WE are discussing a song WE all know about? If you don’t know the song, then this thread has no meaning for you. Not everything on CAF is going to be relevant to your particular interests, needs, knowledge…
