While wandering through the forums, I came across one in the AAA page regarding the hymn “Mary, Did You Know”. The Children’s Choir at my parish performed this piece and it’s lyrics were rather troubling. One line says “Mary, did you know, that the baby boy you delivered would deliver you?” Inasmuch as Christ redeemed Mary, God applied the saving merits of his Son’s Passion, Death and Resurrection at the moment of His Mother’s conception. This particular line of the song has gotten it wrong.
Here are the lyrics:
What say you guys?
Here are the lyrics:
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Would someday walk on water?
Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
That your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you.
Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Will calm the storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby
You’ve kissed the face of God.
The blind will see
The deaf will hear
The dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb
Did the author assume that Mary didn’t know that her Son was the Son of God? It seems to just forget that the Archangel Gabriel had already told Mary just who her Son would be.Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Will one day rule the nations?
Did you know
That your baby boy
Is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding
Is the Great I Am
What say you guys?
