I’m not clear on this. The Church teaches that Mary didn’t suffer pain during childbirth because she was sinless, correct? Why did she suffer at the Crucifixion then?

Jesus was God – and HE suffered at the crucifixion.
The fact that she was conceived without the stain of original sin doesn’t mean that she never suffered. If so, that would mean that she never stubbed her toe or cut herself whil chopping vegetables, etc.

Birth pains were specifically a result of original sin–since she had no original sin, she had no birth pains. This doesn’t preclude other forms of suffering and sacrifice.

Hi Lampo,

It is not church teaching that Mary felt no pain.

What may have you confused is the common belief that Mary did not feel the pains of childbirth. The Church teaches that Mary was ever a virgin : before, during and after the birth of Jesus. This means that she maintained her physical integrity during childbirth. It is reasonable then to believe that Mary did not feel the pains of childbirth. John Paul II said that Mary’s pain was felt on Calvary when she brought us forth as her spiritual children, offering her Divine Son to the Father as a participant in our redemption.
