Mary, God and Joseph

I have always wondered if Mary and God were married?
I quess what I’m asking if they weren’t married then wouldn’t Mary have concieved out of wedlock which is a sin and against the CC teachings?
If they were married did they have to divorce inorder for her to marry Joseph?
If not then wouldn’t Mary be married to both God and Joseph which would be a sin and against the CC teachings?
Not trying to say anything negative about Mary or God, I have always wondered about this.

For one thing … carnal relations between unmarried persons is not considered a sin only by catholics nor a violation of only the teachins of the Catholic Church …

Intamate carnal relationship between unmarried persons is considered a sin by all Chritians and a violation of the Christian faith, the teachings of Christianity … and when I attended the Baptist Church - the Christians within that faith community held to that teaching …

Now as for the relationship between Mary and God …Mary is referred to as the “spouse of the Holy Spirit” by the Early Church Fathers … but are you asking if mary and “God” held a marriage ceremony like the average Bride and Groom today … before their community - vows before a Rabbi … c’mon …

Did Mary have to ‘divorce’ God to marry Joseph? … Again, one must ask - are you a serious Christian?

God choose Mary to be the Ark of the New Covenant … bearing the Word Made Flesh, the Bread from Heaven, the High Priest … God Incarnate … from her conception, Mary was saved by the merits of Christ - redeemed - and thus remained Full of Grace - to recieve and bear Jesus, the Son of God, the Messiah … Viirgin - before during and after …

Joseph took Mary and the Child into his care - he protected and provided for them - as instructed by the Angel on behalf of his God … An earthly father -

Jesus is the New Adam and Mary is the Woman - the New Eve

Now can we understand all of this - in human terms - conform them to human institutions and human comprehension and description … NO …

The Incarnation - God entering into history, taking on mortal humanity is a profound mystery.

A Virgin giving birth to any child is a mystery but concieving and giving birth to the God-Man is a mystery …

Why did God decide to do it “this way” is a mystery …

Joseph was Mary’s chaste spouse … his role was the care of and protection of Mary and Jesus … As an example: one reason [and not the only one I am sure] for the betrothal of Mary to Joseph is that without the ‘marriage’ Mary was subject to stoning - putting her and Jesus’ lies at risk of death …

As I young teen I kinda wondered about this too. but as YADA said, we can’t really apply a fully human understanding to these things for they are of God.

To try to answer your specific question:

I may have missed something but I do not believe there is any teaching, applicable to the biblical timeframe, about “conceiving” out of wedlock being a sin. Fornication, having sexual relations, outside of marriafge is sinful, but I don’t think that anything is said about “conception” being a sin.
(I believe the Church does frown on “artificial insemination” and such things, but this is not applicable to the biblical timeframe.)
So Mary conceiving through the Holy Spirit did not sin.
HOWEVER
The community was not likely to accept the idea of her having conceived miraculously so to protect her from scandal, and possibly death by stoning, God employed dear St Joseph to marry and protect The Mother of, and the Son of God.
