The author, Jaroslav Pelikan, begins by expressing surprise at how little the Bible speaks of Mary given her enormous role in the church. I think he is right, which is why Protestants are so unable to understand the focus on Mary by Catholics and Orthodox.

Here is a discussion on this site, it is a pretty decent discussion I found from the ProtoEvangelium of ST. James. The Bible is about Jesus, the Triune God, so it was not selected by the councels to be in the Scriptures. However, St. James tells us about the family of Christ, his earthly family. This is how we know Ann and Joachim are Mary’s parents. In the Eastern Churches this is the tradition we follow, and as you read in the article below. There is really only one thing we need to know about The Blessed Virgin Mary. It is that she made her “Fiat”. Without it we would not have Jesus as we know Him today, and you would not be enjoying this Forum. You wouldn’t have a New Testament. Her Fiat is the center of our Faith, because the instant She said it, Christ came into her Womb. So He becomes central and She in all humilitly retreats.
