Mary Magdalene appears to have a much different persona in the East as compared to the West. Would anyone be able to give me some background for this difference, and also comment on Pope Saint Gregory the Great (Gregory the Dialogist) and how he spoke of who she was?

How does the West describe her?
I recall Father Corapi saying that she was “the biggest prostitute in all of Palestine” out of whom Christ drove seven demons - and, then, proceeding to make the connection between a very sinful life and demonic influence/possession.

So it seems that the Western Church - incorrectly? - identifies St Mary Magdalene with the sinful woman in Luke 7 weeping at Christ’s feet and anointing him with oil.

I’ve also heard she is believed also to be the woman in John 8 whom Christ saved from being stoned. She is best known as a repentant sinner in the Western tradition: catholic-forum.com/saints/saintm11.htm

Much of this opinion of her is attributed to Pope Saint Gregory the Great, but I doubt it was a new idea in his time.

New Advent goes into some detail about the different views between the east, west, and protestant traditions, but I’m looking for a bit of history on how / when the idea of Mary Magdalene as the penitent sinner came to be.

The town of Magdela was not known for its virtues and as to whether Mary of Magdela was a prostitute is still up for grabs. The fact that she was from Magdela may have automatically tagged her as an indecent person.

Would you be able to point me to any sources which would corroborate this assertion? I’ve often wondered if that were the reason behind the perception of Saint Mary Magdalene as the sinning woman.
