I received this dvd a few days ago (from Ignatius Press), and it gives a beautiful portrayal of Mary. But before Mary became the ‘Mother of God’, she was a young girl and a young mother. This dvd portrays the Mary as a loving mother and Jesus as her loving son! There is also a nice moment in this dvd when Mary transitions from loving Mother to loving disciple.
For those interested, Mary of Nazareth will be playing on EWTN this Saturday night at 8pm Eastern Time. It will only be the 1st part (1hr and a half), though. Not sure when the 2nd part will be.
I watched it and it’s a spectacular movie! I loved it so much I bought a copy for my parish priest to watch and keep. The supplementary DVD has interviews with Alissa Jung, the actress who portrays Mary, and with Fr. Donald Calloway MIC. His interview is about an hour in length and worth the watch because he discusses many things about the movie that make you think. For example, he talks about Mary’s labor during childbirth; in the movie she’s breathing rhythmically but not in obvious pain. Fr. Calloway points out that this is in keeping with Scripture, because if Mary was born without original sin, she would not experience pain but in some movies he’s seen she’s in agony. Hmmm…never thought of that before but I’m a new Catholic! I was welcomed into my church this past July.
And as CalCatholic mentioned, the moment when she transitions from loving Mother to disciple is profound.
