Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The Dominican Sister who taught us in Catholic High School to pray, “Our Lady of Light, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, pray for us” was also the Spiritual Director for our Legion of Mary group which was called: “Mary, Praise of the Trinity Praesidium”. The Legion of Mary founded in 1921 by the layman Servant of God Frank Duff was modeled after the Roman Army which is probably the most effective army in history – having conquered the whole world in its time. Frank Duff however wanted to conquer the world for Jesus through Mary. The Latin word “Praesidium” means “garrison or gathering place for soldiers in an army”. Each local group of Legionaries chooses a title of Our Lady as a name for their “Praesidium”.
As a teenager, I never really thought much about the Trinity, but I believe God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, never had me (and us) out of their “thought”.
This coming Sunday we will be celebrating another great Feast which comes logically after the great Feast of Pentecost – next Sunday we celebrate Trinity Sunday. Only by God’s grace, poured forth into our hearts, could we even begin to ponder this wonderful Mystery of our Faith. The Holy Spirit, Jesus promised, would bring us into the complete Truth.
Mary, now united with God in the Beatific Vision, helps us by her example and by her prayers to come into an ever deeper relationship with Our Father, the Only begotten Son who became incarnate in her Womb, and the Holy Spirit who overshadowed her and was sent by the Father and the Son to “overshadow” the Church to make us fruitful. By the power of the Holy Spirit we too are sent to bring God into our world. We too are to bring forth Jesus, as Mary did. Jesus is our “fruit” not physically, but spiritually.
Jesus told His disciples: “…Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” (John 20:21)
Please let us pray for one another, and for the Church, this week as we prepare for Trinity Sunday. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray with us and for us, that we too become each a new Praise of the Trinity!
