“Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum”
In modern terms Mary was being asked to consent to being an unwed mother in the eyes of her society. The punishment for this would likely have been death by stoning and at the very least public disgrace. She would risk not only the humiliation of public suspicion, gossip, and ridicule but also the rejection of her family and Joseph to whom she was betrothed.
Yet, with confidence in the faithfulness of God, she humbly agreed. God had made her for this very purpose but He had given her the gift of free will which He respected in sending the angel Gabriel. She believed.
Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.
My question is this. Why is this Woman who so humbly and willingly co-operated with the will of God for our salvation still being persecuted even to this day?
