Mary: Spouse of Joseph?

A friend asked me this question today and I did not know the answer.

Is there any contradiction in referring to the Blessed Mother as spouse of the Holy Spirit and spouse of Joseph? I assume perpetual virginity is the key here but I can’t recall ever reading a church father or recent apologist on this topic.

Can anyone point me to an answer?

No more a contradiction than referring to Mary as a child of God the Father and a child of her human father.
 
Is ‘spouse of the Holy Spirit’ an analog?

In the Mass, St. Joseph is called her spouse. It would have been a non-consummated sacramental marriage. They raised Jesus, mother and father. Jesus is even given Joseph’s lineage in the gospel.
 
Mary was the wife of Joseph so she was his spouse. Mary conceived through the Holy Spirit so she’s His spouse. No contradiction just truth

Let me elaborate.

I believe the church’s teaching and think the title “Spouse of the Holy Spirit” is a beautiful and accurate one. I’m seeking a response that addresses a claim that we think Mary has two spouses.

I suspect Todd977 is on the right track; spiritual fatherhood and earthly fatherhood do not contradict one another… Further, if we recall Jesus’ teaching about marriage and the end of time, we are not “given” in marriage after the resurrection but are “as the angels.” Physical death (Joseph’s) ended that marriage bond and in eternity Mary is the spouse of the Holy Spirit forever, as St. Maximilian Kolbe wrote.

It may be one of those mysteries that we except by faith and move on. That’s fine. I was just wondering if someone knew of a church father, apologist or article that explored this.
