19 Then the sanctuary of God in heaven opened, and the ark of the covenant could be seen inside it. Then came flashes of lightning, peals of thunder and an earthquake and violent hail.

Can anyone post me some references from Catholic study Bibles regarding the meaning of Ark of the covenant here? I assume it is Mary.

I cannot attest to the Marian interpretation, as I have not consulted a study Bible or commentary about the book of Revelation.

Without further elaboration, I would think that, in the sanctuary of God, the ark is the mercy seat of God, where in the transcendent view of things, God is thought to dwell. There was nothing holier on earth than the ark. It was a visual representation of the presence of God.

Surely, there is one place where God stands alone, distanced even from Mary, and that would be in his sanctuary. I don’t view Mary as being inseparable from God.

(I don’t think what any person thinks about Mary alters her status with respect to the Almighty. Her status is, first and foremost, based on the judgment of God, to which I can neither add nor detract – even if I had a mind to try it.) Mary’s glory is, at best, the reflected glory of God himself.

Perhaps the very next verses could illuminate the issue some? (Remember, the chapter and verse numbers were added to the Bible in the Middle Ages by monks to make reading and copying the Bible easier. So in the original writing of Revelation, there is no separation of ch.11 verse 19, and ch.12 verse 1.)

*12:1 A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. 2 **She was with child **and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth. 3 Then another sign appeared in the sky; it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on its heads were seven diadems. 4 Its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky and hurled them down to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth. 5 **She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations *with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to God and his throne. 6 The woman herself fled into the desert where she had a place prepared by God, that there she might be taken care of for twelve hundred and sixty days.
