Is there a time frame in which the view of Mary as the ark of the new covenant was taught to the whole Church? Was it from the beginning?

I know Tim Staples’ tapes on the Blessed Mother talk in depth about this topic. I’ve listened to them several times but I’m terrible at remembering dates. He talks a lot about the early Church Fathers ideas on this, but also uses much Scripture to support the idea. Very interesting to hear all of the NT comparrisons that identify Mary as the NT ark (dancing before the Ark, Holy Spirit overshadowing the Ark, the 3 months that Mary stays in Elizabeth’s house, etc). I will try to listen to the part of the tapes that talk about Mary as the NT Ark and get some dates to go with this.

A good website for sure, but Ephraim called her an Ark explicitly around 370 A.D. in a hymn which would have been said at Mass.
Earlier Fathers connected the Ark typology to a number of items, including Jesus human body and also the church itself. Of course we want to avoid the former because it promotes the idea that Jesus’ human body is a contained that holds God rather than being God Himself.

I did find where Tim Staples said that St. Hippolytus (I think) wrote in a letter that Mary was the Ark of the Covenant in 200 AD. I thought there were some more references to the Church Fathers dealing with Mary as the Ark, but I struggled finding them on the tape.
He discusses a lot on the OT events dealing with the Ark and how they coincide with the NT fulfillment of the Ark, Mary. The other posters also give some good examples from the ECF.

The latter set of tapes are the ones that I have, and they are awesome. Tim discusses almost all of the topics dealing with Mary, using a lot of Scripture and refers to the ECF about many of the topics covered.

The often quoted Hippolytus mentioning Mary is the Ark of the Covenant is a common error which has been made by many Catholic apologists and theologians, including Steve Ray, Scott Hahn, etc. I love them all, but when you study Hippolytus, most of his writings mention that Jesus’ physical body is the Ark, and not Mary.I did find where Tim Staples said that St. Hippolytus (I think) wrote in a letter that Mary was the Ark of the Covenant in 200 AD. The original Ark of the Covenant was basically a special box that was awesomely important for ancient Jews. It held a few things, but most importantly it held the presence of God Himself. It is the means by which God communicated with his people.
Some early Christians saw Mary as the new Ark, because she bore the presence of God within herself, in her womb. Check out these links:
