Mary, the Dawn -- Christ the Perfect Day!

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Early this morning, before the sun rose, I thought of this hymn:

Mary the dawn, Christ the perfect Day.
Mary the gate, Christ the heavenly Way.

Mary the root, Christ the mystic Vine.
Mary the grape, Christ the sacred Wine.

Mary the wheat, Christ the living Bread.
Mary the rosebush, Christ the Rose bloodred.

Mary the font, Christ the cleansing Flood.
Mary the chalice, Christ the saving Blood.

Mary the temple, Christ the temple’s Lord.
Mary the shrine, Christ the God adored.

Mary the beacon, Christ the haven’s Rest.
Mary the mirror, Christ the Vision blest.

Mary the mother, Christ the mother’s Son.
By all things blest while endless ages run.

Today’s First Reading at Mass encourages all: looking to Mary, knowing she shines only with the Light of Christ, as we are called to shine:
…But the wise shall shine brightly
like the splendor of the firmament,
and those who lead the many to justice
shall be like the stars forever.

Wow, thanks for this reflection! 🙂 I never thought of the First Reading as being connected to Mary when I read it at Mass today; I was merely thinking of the just who would one day receive the eternal reward. At any rate, you have enriched my reflections, and I thank you for that 😃

(at this point I would want to ask Mary’s intercession in all our needs, especially for the us students at university who will soon have the finals upon us)
Mary, Seat of Wisdom, pray for us!
 
Isn’t that a wonderful hymn? I heard it once - years ago - and have never forgotten it.

Thanks for your reply. Mary is called “Seat of Wisdom” for she held Wisdom Incarnate within her womb. As a child He sat upon her lap! Mary learned from Jesus as all of us are called to learn by the power of the Holy Spirit. She looked upon His Face first, and listened to His every Word. She kept all His Truth in her heart, pondering and continuing to learn and to share the Truth she heard.

If we want to be wise, then we need to ask the Holy Spirit to help us grow in grace and we need to do as Jesus told us through John the beloved disciple – “Behold your Mother”. We need to obey Jesus as John did and take Mary, our Mother and Model, into our lives.

May our Mother intercede for you and all students who are earnestly studying for exams.

Thanks for your reply, Bonnie. Yes it is beautiful and each line of that hymn gives us much to ponder. By God’s grace, we “see” in Mary a simple human person saying, “Yes” to God and we see God doing great things in her. Holy is His Name!
 
Mary the Dawn was first published in 1949 under the pen name “Paul Cross”.
The melody of Mary the Dawn is an adaption of Gregorian Mode IV.
