My wife is catholic while I was raised lutheran, recently I attended what was called a crowning ceremony for Mary. I want to know how she has been proclaimed by the catholic church as the Queen of Heaven. Is there any biblical writings to support this view? I reconize her as the physical mother of jesus the man, not the mother of god, since she is human and was created like all of us by god.

Jesus is both man and God, but he is still one person. How do you figure seperating “Jesus the man” from “Jesus the God”?

Jeff, if you’re still around, when Catholics refer to Mary as the Mother of God, they do not mean * “the Creator of God” * or any such contrivance which a well-known televangelist was known to repeat and propagate, thus coining the word “mariolotry” as in ‘idolotry’.

The history of the title “Mary, the mother of God” shows that the Catholic church had to correct Arius who taught falsely that Jesus was only human and not God. As the Church proclaimed Mary ‘theotokus’ this declared that Jesus is both God and man at the same time and was an added clarification about who Jesus really is-the God-man born of a human mother.

Hope that helps,

Christ’s peace,

The Queen Mother comes from Jewish tradition.

I Kings 2:19-20
Bathsheba was the Queen Mother of King Solomon. The mother was Queen because at that time the King had many wives and could not choose one to be Queen, so the King’s mother was Queen. This began the tradition of the Queen Mother, sitting at the right hand of the King.

Since, then, Jesus is the King of Kings, and Mary His mother, it’s only fitting that she should be Queen of heaven, the Queen Mother.

There is also much written about Mary as the ark of the the new covenant, since she carried the Holy of Holies within her womb. There are other threads that have discussed this topic if you search for “Ark of the covenant” and “Mary.”

Also, Jesus gave her to us while He was on the cross ''Behold your mother." She is the spiritual mother to us all.

I believe that scriptural references to the coronation of Mary can be found in the twelfth chapter of Revelation beginning with verse one. I also think that there is a reference in the songs of Solomon but not quite sure of the exact chapter and verse.

Many non-Catholic Christians don’t accept that Mary is part of the symbolism of Revelation 12. Here’s a link explaining how she is: catholic.com/thisrock/1997/9705chap.asp

While many disagree with the Catholic understanding of Revelation, Chapter 12, a simple reading with pertinant quwestions will suffice.

After reading the chapter, answer the questions:

Who is the child? See vs. 5 for a clue.
Who is the woman? After answering the previous question, there is really ony one answer to this.
What was she wearing on her head? Some bible translations have different answers to this. The New American Bible and KJV say that she wore a crown of twelve stars.
Who are the rest of her offspring in vs. 17? Vs. 17 gives the answer.
What does the completed set of answers conclude?

I have given the questions without my answers so that you may come to your own conclusions.

Revelation
Chapter 12
1 A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
2 She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth.
3 Then another sign appeared in the sky; it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on its heads were seven diadems.
4 Its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky and hurled them down to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth.
5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to God and his throne.
6 The woman herself fled into the desert where she had a place prepared by God, that there she might be taken care of for twelve hundred and sixty days.
7 Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back,
8 but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.
9 The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it.
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have salvation and power come, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed. For the accuser of our brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and night.
11 They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; love for life did not deter them from death.
12 Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them. But woe to you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in great fury, for he knows he has but a short time.”
13 When the dragon saw that it had been thrown down to the earth, it pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle, so that she could fly to her place in the desert, where, far from the serpent, she was taken care of for a year, two years, and a half-year.
15 The serpent, however, spewed a torrent of water out of his mouth after the woman to sweep her away with the current.
16 But the earth helped the woman and opened its mouth and swallowed the flood that the dragon spewed out of its mouth.
17 Then the dragon became angry with the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus.
