…"…As she moved through the Palestinian countryside, Mary would have seen what everyone else saw - a land reeling under the impact of a growing population and over-grazing by flocks of sheep and goat, their shepherds taking them further and further into the few remaining ‘wilderness’ areas. She also witnessed the first century version of ‘agribusiness’ – wealthy people were buying up large tracts of land, to grow cash crops (wine, olives, grain), and so forcing the peasants into poverty, homelessness and pools of unemployed men, waiting to be hired.
