I couldnt believe it when I heard this tonight!!! Mary was only a vessel for the Lord, because God put him in there.
How can one not see the Jesus is God, which means Mary is the Mother of the Lord?
I guess I’m just looking for more understanding on how Mary just doesnt seem important to some.

She is the new Eve, The Ark of the New Covenant, and the Queen Mother- all scriptually based.

You can’t believe that others don’t believe what you believe? I know the feeling.😉

If that’s the case, then there was nothing sacred about the overshadowing of Mary by the Holy Spirit. Their union was just as vicious as copulation is in the animal kingdom.

“And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”*
Luke 1, 43

“There is one Physician who is possessed both of flesh and spirit; both made and not made; God existing in flesh; true life in death; both of Mary and of God; first possible and then impossible, even Jesus Christ our Lord.”
St. Ignatius of Antioch (c.A.D. 110)

Sure, Mary was a Vessel, but not JUST a vessel. If you look in the OT, we find the ARK of the covenant, so was it JUST an ARK? if it was just an ARK, why did Uzzah die just for touching it, and why did he touch it? inorder to prevent it from falling, so why did he die?

1 Chronicles 13:9-10 in NIV says, When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died.

What was in the Ark? The written word of God, and what was in Mother Mary? the Real Word of God. So if someone says that Mother Mary was just a vessel, then imagine the plight of them when God looks them with anger.

May God Bless them.

Mere vessels cannot give their considered consent for being used for their intended purpose.

Why would the Father send his son through the normal human channel of pregnancy and birth when he could just have sent him to earth…poof!.. as either a young boy or an adult ready to do his work if the “vessel” was unimportant?

Amen amen. I just dont understand how some can be so relaxed on their beliefs about her. She is all of our Mothers in heaven. Why does no one else seem to view her, even as blessed?

A comparison between Moses and Mary:

**And now ponder in thy heart the commotion which God stirreth up.
Reflect upon the strange and manifold trials with which He doth test His servants. Consider how He hath suddenly chosen from among His servants, and entrusted with the exalted mission of divine guidance Him Who was known as guilty of homicide, Who, Himself, had acknowledged His cruelty, and Who for well-nigh thirty years had, in the eyes of the world, been reared in the home of Pharaoh and been nourished at his table. Was not God, the omnipotent King, able to withhold the hand of Moses from murder, so that manslaughter should not be attributed unto Him, causing bewilderment and aversion among the people?
Likewise, reflect upon the state and condition of Mary. So deep was the perplexity of that most beauteous countenance, so grievous her case, that she bitterly regretted she had ever been born. To this beareth witness the text of the sacred verse wherein it is mentioned that after Mary had given birth to Jesus, she bemoaned her plight and cried out: “O would that I had died ere this, and been a thing forgotten, forgotten quite!” [Qur’án 19:22]
I swear by God! Such lamenting consumeth the heart and shaketh the being.
Such consternation of soul, such despondency, could have been caused by no other than the censure of the enemy and the cavilings of the infidel and perverse. Reflect, what answer could Mary have given to the people around her? How could she claim that a Babe Whose father was unknown had been conceived of the Holy Ghost?
Therefore did Mary, that veiled and immortal Countenance, take up her Child and return unto her home. No sooner had the eyes of the people fallen upon her than they raised their voice saying: *“O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a man of wickedness, nor unchaste thy mother.” * **[Qur’án 19:28.] (Bahá’u’lláh, The Kitab-i-Iqan, p. 56)

You might say to them, “I know why God didn’t choose me to be the mother of His Son, do you know why He didn’t choose you?”

And wolverine makes a good point, since your friend calls Mary a “vessel” which carried the Word of God made flesh, point out that the Ark of the Covenant carried the Word of God in stone, and this:

“Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood—two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. He overlaid it with pure gold, both inside and out, and made a gold molding around it.” (Exodus 37:1-2 NIV)

Our Blessed Mother Mary is indeed “pure” - “inside and out” - the Immaculate Conception. And here she is assumed bodily into Heaven - the Queen of Heaven:

“Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a great hailstorm. A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.” (Revelation 11:19-12:1)

The color-coding might not work for them :p, but then again, trying to explain it to them might not work either. 😦 But all God asks is that you try. God bless.

ISTM, as a Lutheran, that by claiming Mary was simply a vessel, we reduce the importance of her humanity, and therefore, Christ’s humanity in the incarnation.
Now, I don’t think Mary was more than human, but she certainly shouldn’t be considered less than human with no free will.

Mary can never be called “just a vessel”. If we’re going to go down the “just a vessel” road, at the very least Mary has to be described as a “sacred vessel”. That’s in the Bible that everyone, even the “just a vessel” folks, claim to read. (i.e. "Hail Mary FULL OF GRACE … It’s in the BIBLE!! It REALLY IS!!) In Mary, God prepared a sacred place for the incarnation to take place. This is only logical. What is NOT logical is that God would have prepared, or permitted, an unholy place for the incarnation to take place. Are the “just a vessel” folks saying that the incarnation occurred in the same sort of vessel as the rest of us? If so, THEY need to explain why God would have done that sort of thing.

The “just a vessel” comment appears to me to be a slap at the Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. Perhaps that wasn’t specifically outlined in the talk referenced by the OP, but that seems to be the gist of it even if the Doctrine wasn’t specifically stated as the thing they were opposing.

However, people that seek to diminish Mary are seeking to diminish the Mother of God. That’s not very smart. Most guys get irritated when you take swipes at their Mom. I suspect Jesus would be no exception. 😉 And that’s just the HUMAN reaction. The Divine reaction? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

Mary was the vessel; she took care of baby Jesus; she ‘mothered’ Him as He grew up. However, she wasn’t a mother in the way a women’s ovum is fertilized by a sperm. She carried the Lord as a seragate, which makes her a vessel.

She was quite a vessel, but she wasn’t the Mother of God. God didn’t need a Mother.

So, you don’t accept what the Bible says? Good to know! 🤷

A vessel she was, but a specifically chosen one. God could have chosen anyone, but as Gabriel said, Mary was highly favoured by God.

What you have asserted here was defeated in the third century as a heresy by the Church. The reason Mary was given the title “Theotokos” is because He was taken from her “seed”. He was knit together in her womb, blood of her blood, flesh of her flesh. Jesus most definely needed a mother. If He did not, He would not have created one for Himself! Sure, He could have found Himself in the form of a man fully grown, and appeared on earth, but He chose to come through humanity.

I think that Mary’s total trust in God in circumstances no other human will ever have to be in, or ever will are an amazing example of taking the plunge of faith, even deeper than Peter did. Or anyone else in the bible.

you are sooooo right!! if people would only listen and see, and study their ot in the light of the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. especially how she is typified in the old testament in the ark of the covenant. also she is the woman clothed with the sun. When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the desciple standeing whom he loved,he saith to his mother; Woman behold thy son. After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold THY MOTHER. and from that moment the disciple took HER TO HIS OWN. and yes the new eve of all living. even before i became Catholic i knew these things to be true! the Church only confirmed it. i believe only the HOLY GHOST and the Church can reveal these truths to us. 👍
to Jesus thru Mary, just as the wise men had to do. God bless you!

so are you denying Jesus is God the Son. even the bible say Mary was his mother. look at matthew 1 vs 18 Now the generation of Christ was in this wise. WHEN AS HIS MOTHER MARY WAS ESPOUSED TO JOSEPH, BEFORE THEY CAME TOGETHER,SHE WAS FOUND WITH CHILD OF THE HOLY GHOST. i can find more if you like. but for your argument to work you will have to negate Jesus as the second person of the Trinity. and being a christian i dont think you will do that. there is so much to discuss here but not enough space or time i think. this subject really is motivating. 🙂

I wonder how the humble Virgin from Nazareth would react if she knew that followers of her Son were being contentious and combative over whether or not she had ever sinned or had relations with her husband or whether or not her body was taken to heaven. I don’t think the Mary of the Bible would care much for matters of her personal life being a cause of division amongst Christians. I will not disown a Christian for having his or her own sincere beliefs about the Blessed Virgin Mary. It would be nice if Rome extended the same charity towards others instead of labeling dissenters as heretics. I can’t imagine that pleases the Mother of the Lord.

Mary is connaturally related to the Word become flesh, having been overshadowed by the Holy Spirit. It was through her that God created our Lord’s human soul and that the divine Word acquired his human intellect and will by the power of the Holy Spirit - the active non-separate principle of our Lord’s human generation. Thus she is the Mother of God.

“If anyone does not believe that Holy Mary is the Mother of God, he is severed from the Godhead.”
Gregory of Nazianzus, To Cledonius, 101 (A.D. 382)
