How do I explain to my protestant wife who refers to John 8:19 that stated that Jesus rejected MAry and that Mary had other children after Jesus. She said that Mary was not remained an eternal virgin after Jesus.

Many tribes, including the Jewish tribes, refer to relatives including cousins as brothers and sisters.

You may kindly remind your wife that at the Wedding feast of Cana, Mary pointed out to Jesus that the hosts of the wedding feast were running out of wine. It wasn’t a matter of life or death, but certainly one of losing face, embaressment fot the family. Jesus at first protested at the notion of helping in this. He reminded His mother that it was not yet time for Him to begin His public mission.'My time has not yet come." Mary, woman of faith, simply told the servant to do whatever Jesus told them to…and he worked the miracle of changing water into wine anyway, ahead of planned time for public miracles. ( John 1:1-12)

Remind your dear wife also that one of the last things Jesus did as He hung in agony on the cross, was to provide a carer and a home for His mother. When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home" ( John 19:26-27)

Please give me the biblical reference. She likes to say if it not in the Bible it is not true.

Yes, I was on to that! I know the facts but don’t have the best memory for numbers! 🙂 So I get to go through the New Testament a lot…perhaps an effective method that God employs to keep me reading the bible. I’ll see what I can find regarding the other issue. I do have a memory of at least one reference in scripture…but it is also sociologically true.

I’ll get back to you later unless someone else is able to help you…not at work or otherwise busy asleep…but I need to give my husband asistance for a period… so am signing off for the moment.

God bless you…Trishie

ummmm… John 8:19 says nothing about Mary. FWIW.

But the scripture your wife is refering to(in Mark ch,3) does not take anything away from the fact that Mary was and remained sinless.

As pointed out it was common in those days to call cousins brothers and sisters. Also, the scripture does not imply that ‘Jesus rejects Mary’ - rather it implys that if we follow Jesus and His teachings, we become his ‘family’ so to speak.

Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” And they took offense at him. (Matthew 13:54-57)

Does your wife realize that Joseph wasn’t really the father of Jesus? Its good to be in on God’s secrets, no? You could point out the Bible never says that:
  1. Mary had children other than Jesus.
  2. Joseph had any children.
  3. Joseph and Mary ever consummated their “marriage”.
  4. Joseph and Mary ever got married.
  5. Mary was a widow (even though Joseph is not present after Jesus was 12 years old).
And you could try to get her to St. Jerome’s The Perpetual Virginity of Blessed Mary.

This is a good answer.
I am a Christian (but not a Catholic). One major difference between the Protestans and the Roman Catholic (RC) is Mary and her position.
I used to find it strange that RC upholds Mary so much without the basis of the bible.
Now, the more I read the bible, the more I start to understand and appreciate her.
She can never replace Jesus but she is a person of significance that she has earned our respects

On all 3 counts this is incorrect.
  1. Jesus never rejected a request from Mary. Mary is Jesus mother. No son rejects his mother.
  2. Mary never had any other children besides Jesus. When Scripture speaks of ‘brothers of Jesus’ they do not mean that Mary bore other children beside Jesus.
  3. Mary remained a virgin because she was made pregnant by the Holy Spirit that had come down upon her. God placed Himself into her sinless body by the means of passing into her, not having intercourse with her…this is the reason she remained a virgin…her hymen was intact, and Joseph never slept with Mary to impregnate her.
Have a good day Mary

The Three Mary’s.Luke 1:26-56 Hail Mary Full of Grace. This is our Blessed Mother.#2.Mt.27:55-56 Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James,Joseph.Another thing you might want to consider is if Jesus had brothers as "we"think of brothers,Jesus who was without sin, would have been breaking Jewish law by giving the care and responsbility of the Blessed Mother to anyone except Her Oldest child.A question:What does Blessed and full of Grace mean?Peace,Rocky.

Jesus would never reject his mother. He never did. He never will. This would go against the commandment to “honor your father and your mother.” In a few places in scripture we find Jesus refering to Mary as “woman” and protestants tend to view this as some sort of rejection. Jesus’ words are always so rich and profound but are often misunderstood. Would Jesus who is God and Perfect Love reject the woman who carried him for nine months in her womb? Would He reject the woman who breast fed Him? Would He reject the woman who kept him warm at night and took care of all His needs as a child? Would Jesus reject the woman who loved Him the most? would JESUS really reject His Mother? Would Jesus reject the Mother of God? would Jesus really reject the woman who risked being stoned to death for bringing Him(Salvation) to this world? This would be unlike God…Unlike Love…Unlike Jesus.

Why would Jesus call Mary “woman” instead of “mother” in the scriptures?
Much is said about Mary in scriptures but it is often overlooked. References to Mary are found throught the whole Bible from the first to the last book. The first prophesy in the Bible (Gen 3:15) actually makes a reference to Mary the “WOMAN” who would stomp on the serpents(satan) head. In Apocalipse 12 we hear a prophesy about a glorified woman who is clearly Mary the Mother of Christ and MOST BLESSED AMONG ALL WOMAN (Luke 1:42)? If Jesus refers to Mary as “woman” it is to teach us who she really is…She is the “Woman” of the Prophesies!

Mary professied about herself that all ages would call her blessed (Luke 1:48). Jesus proclaims Mary as mother of his diciples in John 19:26-27. In Apocalypse 12 we see how the “woman” gave birth to One child “destined to rule all nations” but she also had other offspring. This is true to Mary who gave phisical birth to Jesus Christ and who is also a mother to all of us who consider ourselves christian or deciples of Christ.

About the “brothers” of Jesus mentioned in the gospels like James and Joseph (Mat 13:55) we can see that their real mother is another Mary (Mat 27:56). Other parents can also be traced to the other two mentioned as brothers of Jesus but dont remember where.

About the word translated as “brother” which may actually mean cousin, uncle, relative or so on you can look in Genesis 13:8 where Abraham refers to his nephew (Gen 12:5) as brother.

There is much, much more to be said about Mary…I hope this helps.

I start to appreciate more from the bible.

However, forgive me to ask one more question: how much we should respect Jesus without confusing her position with Jesus? This is always the basis of the protestant churches criticising Mary.

Please forgive me to raise this simple question.

There is no possibility whatsoever of confusing her position with that of Jesus unless you actually start to say Mary is divine - for example Mary is goddess, Mary is our creator, Mary is our saviour and similar things.

Catholic teaching fully recognises her inestimably humble position as a mere creature in the face of God who is her Creator and ours. Nonetheless, she is as far above all we other creatures, as the chosen Mother of God, as God Himself is above her.

Thank you for the reply, sir/madam.
I have got a better understanding of Mary who is always very special in my mind.

Do not worry about giving Mary “too much” honor. We could never thank her enough for having such an important role in our salvation. If someone loves and honors your mother would this upset you? Have confidence that by honoring Mary, our Lord Jesus Christ is not diminished but honored himself.

Recall adam and eve. Remember that sin and the fall of man came into the world through one woman’s disobedience…so also Salvation came into the world through total obedience of one woman “and Mary said, ‘Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word’” (Luke 1:38). It is through this total and complete Yes that salvation enters the world. Salvation could not have come into the world without Mary’s acceptance of God’s divine plan. Fall of man(Adam) came through a woman(Eve)…Salvation(Christ) of man came through a woman(Mary). Similarly as Eve can be considered the mother of humanity by nature, Mary can also be considered a mother to humanity by grace.

Of course it was Jesus who saved us but we must not undermine Mary’s huge but silent role(she was just a “handmaid” doing her job as we should all do). But remember that this “handmaid” was Hailed by the archangel Gabriel(and he came in unto her, and said, “Hail, thou that art highly favored (full of grace), the Lord is with thee.”) If an archangel hail’s Mary even before she became the mother of Christ, should “we” humans not hail her even more since we received our Salvation(Christ) through her? Saint John the Baptist(of whom Jesus said “among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist” [Matthew 11:11]) jumped of joy in his mother’s womb just at the sound of Mary’s voice( Luke 1:41). His mother Saint Elizabeth feels completely honored and is filled by the Holy Spirit by her presence and feels unworthy of it saying" and whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me?"(Luke 1:43)

Who is this woman whom by her presence fills the air with the Holy Spirit? Who is this woman who’s voice brings joy even to the holiest of men? Who is this woman who is worthy of being hailed by the angels? This is MARY FULL OF GRACE! She is filled to the brim. No space for anything other than God’s grace.

Please note that when the archangel refers to Mary as “full of grace” he was not merely refering to her current state but to her actual essence and being.

Deepening our relationship with Mary can only strengthen our relationship with Christ. Mary always points to Christ and never takes for herself what belongs to God. When she was praised by the archangel she declares herself a slave, servant or handmaid. When she was praised by Saint Elizabeth she immediately turns around and praises God with her famous magnificat(all this in Luke1). We can even recall Mary’s words to the servants at the wedding of Cana, “whatsoever He(Jesus) saith unto you, do it.” These words led to Jesus’ first miracle(which came about through Mary’s Intercession). We can see that Mary always directs us to God even in a way which can produce miracles.

Feel confident that Jesus is pleased to see his disciples come to Mary as they will only be edified, exposed to the Holy Spirit and led to Himself. I challenge you to pray upon this and if you let yourself be guided by the Holy Spirit you will come to find that just as Jesus is willing to share His Father with us He also wants to share His mother with us. this great and beautiful woman is also YOUR MOTHER and is waiting for you to allow her in your life to guide you into the depths of Jesus’ most Sacred Heart. Who knows a child better than his mother? She knows Christ heart perfectly well and she also knows yours…she can teach you to join yours with His.

This is only the beginning…

First - the phrase is not “eternal virgin”. The phrase is “ever-virgin”, or “perpetual virgin”. Not only is this the Church’s language - it is the Church’s language because the Church does not regard the BVM as eternal, since the BVM is as much a creature as anyone on this site. God is eternal - human beings are not eternal. There are enough problems between Catholics & other Christians already, without allowing misunderstandings to arise when they need not. 😦
