LA PLATA, Md. — A school district in Maryland has been sued by a former Marine and his wife for allegedly promoting Islam in student assignments.
In 2014, John Kevin Wood expressed objections to the assignments given to his daughter in her 11th grade world history class at La Plata High School, which included writing out the Islamic Shahada and memorizing the five pillars of Islam.
“There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah,” the Shahada reads.
The Woods state that the study materials told students that “[m]ost Muslim’s faith is stronger than the average Christian,” that Islam is “peaceful” and that “[t]o Muslims, Allah is the same God that is worshiped in Christianity and Judaism.”

It’s not like they were asking them to pray in the Islamic style.

If parents were to react like this, I wonder how they would react to learning about the formation of the Church, the Protestant & English Reformations, religion in today’s America, etc…

Even Islam has played a big part in history.

Isn’t “there is no God but allah” a profession of faith? Whatever happened to separation of mosque and state?

These are public schools, requesting students to memorize a Muslim profession of faith. I wonder what would happen if the same school asked their students to make the sign of the cross.

But this is exactly what they are doing. The school is asking the students to proclaim that they are Muslims.

This isn’t necessarily current, but has anyone ever looked up the Edgerton Bible Case from Wisconsin in 1890? I think it bears on the case.

Learning about Islam as a belief system is not itself coercive, but making statements that “most Muslims faith is stronger than Christians” is both insulting and dogmatic to a degree. One would think they would see the problem.

Strictly speaking, there is no separation of mosque and state in a truly Islamic society and the United States is quite unique among world powers for recognizing such a principle. It’s a Baptist invention to keep out the Anglicans.

If they wanted to teach the role Islam has played in history, then there wouldn’t be a problem, but in no way should these children in a public school be indoctrinated in that faith by making professions to it, period. Any half wit teacher would know what they were teaching was indoctrination into the faith.

The actions by this principle are also quite troubling.

God Bless those parents for stepping up…

I think the fact that the Thomas More Law Center picked up this case on behalf of the parents, says volumes that what the parents have stated on what their children were forced to study, memorize and recite are true as reported.

There is a very great difference between the school system in the UK and the US.

In the US, Catholic schools are strictly private schools. Public schools are strictly secular schools. It is not that way in the UK or Canada.

It’s not in the Constitution. I’m just pointing out that it is the go to defense whenever an atheist is “offended” by a Christmas play or nativity scene, but it never seems to be used against Muslims.

The incident was not in a religious studies course.

It would be rare to have such a course in a U.S. high school.

Yeah. A double standard is to be expected. The vast majority of Americans are at least nominal Christians and so we catch a lot of the abuse, but we have more power than we think. Atheists and others are still a minority in this country, just very loud.

Well on May 25, 2010 students from Wellesley, Massachusetts middle school went to a Boston area mosque and schoolchildren participated in midday Muslim prayers. First of all there would be a consideration for students to be taken to anything even remotely Christian. The word Christmas is not mentioned or taught in schools. Here’s the link. There is also a link in the article to video of the event.
