Was Mary descended from David?
What is the point of Jesus’ genealogies in Matthew and Luke if Joseph is not His father?!

There is no “direct” evidence either way. Scripture says a great miracle shall be a virgin of the house of David shall be with child. One way to look at this is that Mary was “of the house of David” without Joseph, another is that since Joseph was betrothed to Mary, she was “of the house of David” by the betrothal. I choose to believe she was of the house of David since the book of Numbers instructs only daughters to marry within their own tribe. Of course that doesn’t mean she was of the house of David. The point is proving the Scripture is fulfilled in Jesus, which of course it is.

There is nothing in Scripture about Mary being descended from David.
However, the Protoevangelium of James states she is from the line of David.

When Joseph wanted to secretly separate from Mary, the angel appeared to him and told him to marry her.

I thought this was to ensure that Jesus is from the line of David.

(I’m happy for someone to correct me on this.)

St John of Damascus - An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith BOOK IV CHAPTER XIV

Born then of the line of Nathan, the son of David, Levi begat Melchi and Panther: Panther begat Barpanther, so called. This Barpanther begat Joachim: Joachim begat the holy Mother of God. And of the line of Solomon, the son of David, Mathan had a wife of whom he begat Jacob. Now on the death of Mathan, Melchi, of the tribe of Nathan, the son of Levi and brother of Panther, married the wife of Mathan, Jacob’s mother, of whom he begat Heli. Therefore Jacob and Hell became brothers on tile mother’s side, Jacob being of the tribe of Solomon and Heli of the tribe of Nathan. Then Heli of the tribe of Nathan died childless, and Jacob his brother, of the tribe of Solomon, took his wife and raised up seed to his brother and begat Joseph. Joseph, therefore, is by nature the son of Jacob, of the line of Solomon, but by law he is the son of Heli of the line of Nathan.

The Promise that the Messiah would be a son of David was fulfilled in two ways:
  1. by the law (Jewish religious law), since Joseph was the legal father of Jesus and Joseph was descended from David.
  2. by the flesh, since Mary is the biological mother of Jesus, and Mary was descended from David.
Luke 3 gives us the ancestry of Mary, with Joseph’s name standing in her place. Jews did not usually count ancestry from the mother’s line, but of course Luke was not Jewish. As Blessed A.C. Emmerich tells us, Heli is another name for Joachim, the father of Mary.
