Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family and we find ourselves in awe of God’s humility in coming to us as a little child, born of the Virgin Mary. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph is the model for all families.

How good to ponder the two human persons closest to Jesus in the Holy Family! Mary, Immaculate from her own conception shows us the fullness of Grace to which we are all called. As the Catechism describes her, Mary is the Escatological Icon of the Church. We need by God’s grace continually to “Behold” our Mother taking her into our lives. Why? God gave her grace to “mother and care for Jesus” and Jesus gave her to as Mother to all who come after Him. Like the Magi, we find Christ “with His Mother”. Mary’s role as Joseph’s wife, helped Joseph to find in this Child, the Incarnate Word of God, over time – as she helps us all to find Him. We are called to holiness in knowing, loving and serving Him, Who loved us to the end.

St. Joseph, Mary’s husband, was given, the role of Guardian and Protector of Jesus and of Mary. We have no recorded word of his in Scripture but what he thought and did Matthew’s Gospel tells us: “Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly…” When the Angel revealed God’s Will to him in a dream, Matthew continues: “he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.” St. Joseph like Mary is a model for married and single persons in our call to love as God loves.

Today, let us pray the Hail Mary with more attention and devotion, for all the mothers of the world to be guided and helped by Mary to help their husbands and their children, and for unmarried or widowed women to carry Christ as God wills them to carry Him in this world. A prayer to St. Joseph that I pray daily for my husband, all husbands and men in every vocation, in all families, is:
Powerful St. Joseph, in the course of your life, you shone forth as a man of hope. In the midst of trials and difficulties, such as the distressing circumstances of Jesus’ birth, the flight into Egypt, and exile in a foreign land. Your only strength sprang from your unshakable hope in the goodness of God.

Trustingly, I look to you today, because you are so close to God, you are in a position to join your prayers with mine. Beg your Son to sustain us in the trials that confront us at this time. Help us to overcome our sorrows by giving us the same strength that allowed you to carry on in the midst of difficulties. May the guiding light of hope lead us through our trials to the comforting presence of the Father. Amen.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Holy Family of Nazareth, please intercede with our Father, for all the families of the world.
