How lovely for the Church to have as the first Feast-day of Mary’s Month, this Feast in honor of St. Joseph, chaste husband of Mary and Guardian of the Child Jesus! He is honored as “Joseph the Worker” as he is indeed a model for all who labor for others, more than for themselves. Fathers of families are designed by God to provide for their wives and children even as God provides for us.
Another title given to St. Joseph is “Shadow of the Eternal Father” for St. Joseph was given the task of being the human person to guide Jesus in his masculine gifts. Mary as Mother gave Jesus all she could as Mother, but for the human nature of Jesus growing into manhood, Joseph stood as the “man of the house”: guardian, protecter, and worker.
Let us pray to St. Joseph today, pondering our own role in the Family of God. Like Joseph we may work for God’s Glory and the good of others, in whatever work we are given to do. Let us ask Joseph to intercede for us that we may love and serve Jesus and Mary as he did on this earth. May our families and the families of nations all over the world turn to God and respond to His call for us to be holy as He is Holy.
