I was thinking this morning about Mary’s knowledge of who Jesus is. Was she initially aware that her son was the Christ? Probably not…
In Scripture, when Jesus is twelve years old and is found in the temple, we hear him asking:
However, a number of years later at Cana, Mary seems to have come to a knowledge of who Jesus is and what his mission is for:
Perhaps by observing her son over the years and “pondering all those things in her heart” she came to this gradual, more complete revelation of the truth…
Thoughts?
In Scripture, when Jesus is twelve years old and is found in the temple, we hear him asking:
Interestingly the next sentence is:“Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
At this point Mary clearly does not have a full understanding of who her son is – or she would have understood why he needed to be “in his Father’s house”. Joseph, too, at this point evidently has no clue.“But they did not understand what he said to them.” [Lk 2: 49, 50].
However, a number of years later at Cana, Mary seems to have come to a knowledge of who Jesus is and what his mission is for:
Here Mary must have some understanding of who Jesus is, or she would not have tried to persuade him (and the servers) to act in the way she did…When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” (And) Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” [Jn 2:3-5].
Perhaps by observing her son over the years and “pondering all those things in her heart” she came to this gradual, more complete revelation of the truth…
