In another thread I stated my love of Mary’s mantle…

I pretend that Mary covers me in her mantle sometimes when i sleep and feel particularly lonely…

I was wondering if any of you have any knowlege of where I could of gotten this since I was not raised with sacramentals or knowlege of the Church…I must of read it in an old book someone left around or something…is this an approved church teaching, has anyone ever heard of it? Sometimes I think I just drempt it up.

Hello Meggi! 👋

While I can’t answer your question:( , I want to let you know that I too draw comfort from Mary’s Mantle. I call it “Mama’s Mantle”. I first heard the term Mary’s mantle in the Diary of St. Faustina, but it is not very developed in the book, it’s basically a touch and go kind of thing, but for me it really stuck.
I picture Mary standing near me, and especially when I feel scard or threatened, I run to Her and ask Her to cover me with her Mantle. I know that She will protect me. I draw deep comfort from this. I keep remembering over and over agian Her promise that Her Immaculate Heart will triumph along with the Heart of Jesus.
How I long for that day!
I’ve digressed- sorry. I wonder sometimes if Mama’s Mantle is something I made up too, but Iget such peace and comfort from it- how can it be wrong?

I hope this helps. And sorry for not being able to answer your question, but maybe it’s enough to know that you are not alone?

God Bless you Meggi!

Jade.

A hymn from the Melkite tradition:

Protected by your coming, O Mother of God, we the faithful solemnly celebrate today, and gazing upon your spotless image, we cry out, from the depths of our hearts, protect us with your precious veil and deliver us from evil, by asking your Son, Christ our God, to save our souls.

I know that somewhere I have a .gif image of the icon: Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary, Protectress of all Christians which I will post"
  1. when I find it and 2. when I figure out how!

AH HA!!! I studied Latin as a kid (12 or 13)… We did a chapter on Greek I remember Icons and the Theotokos…but I remember it from before then…I had just finished grade 3 and figured out how to read. I had an huge imagination before then, but since then its had that name…or perhaps it got that name when I studied

Did anyone ever write a poem about Mary’s mantle? Cause I have one in my head that I am not sure if i made up or memorized as a kid.

Eastern Christians (Catholic and Orthodox) have a special feastday for the Mantle of Mary on 1st October… It is sometimes called the “Protecting Veil.” If you see a church dedicated to the Protecting Veil or simply to the Protection, it is dedicated to the Mantle of Mary.

A rather nice and simple icon of the Mantle of Mary

May Christ and His saints stand
Between you and harm.
Mary and her Son.
St. Patrick with his staff.
Martin with his mantle.
Bridget with her veil.
Michael with his shield.
And God over all with His strong right hand.

Thank you, Father Ambrose, that’s the icon I had in mind – perhaps someday I’ll get enough computer literacy to post icons here. . .

Dear friends

I also have this notion to be protected under the mantle of our Blessed Virgin Mother Mary, but I don’t know whether it is a teaching of the Church or not or if it is just something that occured to me in prayer.

I’d like to know if anyone can shed light on this

God Bless you and much love and peace ot you

Teresa

It is definitely a devotion that falls squarely within Catholic devotion – best known in the eastern areas of the Church (Melkite Greek-Catholic, Byzantine, etc.), but certainly also encouraged in the West . . . Mary is Protectress of All Christians and we are encouraged to implore her to “protect us with your precious veil.”

I always imagined being covered by Mary’s mantle when I was listing to something evil as if her mantle was sheilding me from the sound or when I was afraid so that she would protect me.
I always thought this after I got this leaflet on the rosary from I which I pray off. On the cover was Mary holding her mantle out and under was a church, preists and lay people.

At our prayer meeting a lady would always reffer to Mary’s mantle
protecting us

so I always assumed that it was assumed it was teaching

hope this helps

My first post on this site. I was searching for some background information on ‘Mary’s mantle’. Just thought that this might be of interest for someone doing the same. I was in Medjugorje on March 25, 1990. This was Mary’s message.

March 25, 1990

“Dear Children!

I am with you even if you are not conscious of it. I want to protect you from everything that Satan offers you and through which he wants to destroy you. As I bore Jesus in my womb, so also dear children do I wish to bear you unto holiness. God wants to save you and sends you messages through men, nature, and so many things, which can only help you understand that you must change the direction of your life. Therefore, little children understand also the greatness of the gift which God is giving you through me, so that I may **protect your with my mantle **and lead you to the joy of life.

Thank you for having responded to my call.”
