Wasn’t it also a custome in those days for some married women to consecrate themselves to God and remain virgins? I seem to remember reading this somewhere.

Point being for Protestants, it may not be as hard for them to believe if they realize this was something practiced back them. Anyone know anything about this custom?

We do have one senior editor who is responsible for decisions regarding the text, but he is also accountable to several other Christians.Everyone who has authority to decide on the wording in the World English Bible believes in the inspiration by the Holy Spirit of the text as recorded by the original authors. In addition, we also believe that the Holy Spirit is still active in preserving the text and helps us in our work to the extent that we let Him.
Funny how the ones that assert the Holy Spirit is working through them to revise the translation (and sadly misinterpret it, as well) are the same ones that say the Catholic Church can’t possibly have had the guidance of the Holy Spirit when she compiled the Bible…

Peace be with you!

Point out that Martin Luther and John Calvin themselves (the two biggest leaders of the Protestant Reformation) believed AND TAUGHT Mary’s perpetual virginity. So even the first Protestants believed that! It is also the traditional Anglican belief as well.

Something in the Sacred Liturgy - e.g., the the Presentation of Mary - should be regarded as “authoritatively supported,” according to the dictum:

Lex orandi fiat statue lex credendi

The law of prayer establishes a law of belief.

Although I agree with the fact that Mary was a perputual virgin. I do not try to teach the Church claims she made a “formal vow of virginity”.

The Church allows is members to have their own opinions on how and why she remained a virgin. But as a Catholic we must accept the teaching that Mary remained a virgin her entire life…
Google the Perpetual Virginity of Mary and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Theres another thread going one about this you should read.

What you first need to understand here is the early Jewish/Hebrew Faith. LIfelong vows of chasity in consecration to God were not uncommon by women or men for that matter. St Joseph also kept a vow of chasity through his life. So why would above “all” Marys be called into question?

The Holy Family had nothing to do with sexual relations. Have you read your Bible? Who else is Full of Grace in the Bible?

Let me explain:
Mary alone found grace with God for herself and for every individual person. No patriarch or prophet or any other holy person of the Old Law could manage to find this grace.

It was Mary who gave existence and life to the author of all grace, and because of this she is called the “Mother of Grace”.

God the Father, from whom, as from its essential source, every perfect gift and every grace come down to us , gave her every grace when he gave her his Son. Thus, as St Bernard says, the will of God is manifested to her in Jesus and with Jesus.

God chose her to be the treasurer, the administrator and the dispenser of all his graces, so that all his graces and gifts pass through her hands. Such is the power that she has received from him that, according to St Bernardine, she gives the graces of the eternal Father, the virtues of Jesus Christ, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit to whom she wills, as and when she wills, and as much as she wills.

As in the natural life a child must have a father and a mother, so in the supernatural life of grace a true child of the Church must have God for his Father and Mary for his mother. If he prides himself on having God for his Father but does not give to Mary the tender affection of a true child, he is an impostor and his father is the devil.

Since Mary produced the head of the elect, Jesus Christ, she must also produce the members of that head, that is, all true Christians. A mother does not conceive a head without members, nor members without a head. If anyone, then, wishes to become a member of Jesus Christ, and consequently be filled with grace and truth , he must be formed in Mary through the grace of Jesus Christ, which she possesses with a fullness enabling her to communicate it abundantly to true members of Jesus Christ, her true children.

The Holy Spirit espoused Mary and produced his greatest work, the incarnate Word, in her, by her and through her. He has never disowned her and so he continues to produce every day, in a mysterious but very real manner, the souls of the elect in her and through her.

Mary received from God a unique dominion over souls enabling her to nourish them and make them more and more godlike. St Augustine went so far as to say that even in this world all the elect are enclosed in the womb of Mary, and that their real birthday is when this good mother brings them forth to eternal life. Consequently, just as an infant draws all its nourishment from its mother, who gives according to its needs, so the elect draw their spiritual nourishment and all their strength from Mary.

It was to Mary that God the Father said, “Dwell in Jacob”, that is, dwell in my elect who are typified by Jacob. It was to Mary that God the Son said, “My dear Mother, your inheritance is in Israel”, that is, in the elect. It was to Mary that the Holy Spirit said, “Place your roots in my elect”. Whoever, then, is of the chosen and predestinate will have the Blessed Virgin living within him, and he will let her plant in his very soul the roots of every virtue, but especially deep humility and ardent charity.

Mary is called by St Augustine, and is indeed, the “living mould of God” . In her alone the God-man was formed in his human nature without losing any feature of the Godhead. In her alone, by the grace of Jesus Christ, man is made godlike as far as human nature is capable of it. A sculptor can make a statue or a life-like model in two ways:
  1. By using his skill, strength, experience and good tools to produce a statue out of hard, shapeless matter;
  2. By making a cast of it in a mould. The first way is long and involved and open to all sorts of accidents. It only needs a faulty stroke of the chisel or hammer to ruin the whole work. The second is quick, easy, straightforward, almost effortless and inexpensive, but the mould must be perfect and true to life and the material must be easy to handle and offer no resistance.
Mary is the great mould of God, fashioned by the Holy Spirit to give human nature to a Man who is God by the hypostatic union, and to fashion through grace men who are like to God. No godly feature is missing from this mould. Everyone who casts himself into it and allows himself to be moulded will acquire every feature of Jesus Christ, true God, with little pain or effort, as befits his weak human condition. He will take on a faithful likeness to Jesus with no possibility of distortion, for the devil has never had and never will have any access to Mary, the holy and immaculate Virgin, in whom there is not the least suspicion of a stain of sin.

From an old thread:
Read Luke chapter 1 carefully. The angel tells her seven very important things. And she asks “how” she will become pregnant?
I find it interesting that, Mt and Lk approach the annunciation (of the birth of Jesus) from different perspectives. Mt, Chap 1 addresses the annunciation from Joseph’s side, while Lk Chap 1 addresses it from Mary’s. I think this is very significant when viewed from the OT book of Numbers. To understand the Scriptural support of her perpetual virginity we need to read Scripture from her perspective.
We know Mary is a young teenager engaged to be married to Joseph and will soon be married. We know they are both good and pious Jews. We know Mary has knowledge of how children are conceived (I know not man). We know that at that time being engaged was considered a part of being married. We also know that Mary and Joseph did not yet have sexual relations. The question we must ask ourselves is, did Mary and Joseph intend to have sexual relations after their marriage?
So, put yourself in her place, you’re soon to be married and one night you’re visited by an angel who tells you the Lord is with you, and you’re blessed among women. I think we can all understand her angst.O.K. well, I’ll be married, have normal sex with Joe, we’ll conceive and have a son, great news it’s a gonna be a boy. His name is a little strange, God is with us? I might ask about the name.Wow, he shall be the king? The expected Davidic king? I have some serious questions about this!
Well, it’s the return of the old Jewish kingdom, and it will last forever, my son will be the great military king the Jewish people have long awaited. Boy do I have questions!!!
What??? Wait a second!!! All of those things the angel said and she asks how she’s gonna become pregnant??? Because she’s a virgin??? Hello Mary!!! You’re engaged, I’m telling you in the future you’re going to become pregnant, certainly you’re not going to be a virgin in the future when you’re married are you??? Oh, wait, maybe you are. That question of yours, “how shall this be done, because I know not man?” makes absolutely no sense to anyone engaged and planning a normal sexual marriage. It only makes sense, and perfect sense, if you’re NOT planning to have sexual relations. Remember she would be answering the angels message of what would occur in the future, with her future state of virginity, not her present state. Would it make sense for her to answer, well sure, I’m a virgin now but how shall this be when I’m married? Certainly she didn’t think the angel was telling her to fornicate prior to her marriage, that would be a sin. So she had no reason to believe her pregnancy would be other than natural and after her marriage. Why then that nagging question?
Now he tells me!!! Why did he wait until I made a fool of myself by asking that silly question? Hmmm maybe God wanted me to ask that question so that you folks reading this 2,000 years later would see that I was under a vow of virginity, that I never intended to have sex after my marriage, that Joe understood that, maybe that’s why you had Mark tell the story from Joes perspective. But boy now I REALLY have questions, what do you mean “overshadow” that’s a term meaning impregnate!! The Holy Spirit of God is going to impregnate me???
No questions? Just let it be done?

When Gabriel tells Mary that the Holy Spirit will ,“overshadow” her - that’s marriage speak just as in the OT. When a woman is overshadowed by a man, it means sexual relations. And when a woman belongs to a man and has marital relations with him, she belongs to that man only and no other man is to have her.

So, for Joseph to find that Mary is pregnant, it means she belongs to another! That other is the Holy Spirit who overshadowed her. She now belongs only to the Holy Spirit and Joseph understood this. For Mary to be carrying God’s Son - which he had been told about by an angel - that was a huge deal! He would no more think of laying with her…she’s carrying God’s Son for cryin out loud! That’s consecarted territory! He understood that he was to be the guardian of God’s Son and he understood that Mary belonged to another! They also understod that their marriage would be a union designed for nurturing, teaching and loving the Son of God! What a special marriage that was.

You cannot put a modern spin on a marriage that existed within the constraints of Judaism and with being a righteous Jew of the first century - one that always centered around following the Law of Moses.

Matthew also wanted to show and to tell everyone that Jesus was NOT of human seed. Therefore, it was important to know that Mary and Joseph DID NOT have relations before he was born otherwise people would believe he was just another human. That’s why Matthew wrote that way. He was trying to prove the point of Jesus’ divinity. And again, if Mary and Jopseph had other children, there would always be the speculation that Jesus’ “could be” human…Mary and Joseph had sex anyway, so why couldn’t Jesus’ be human? ( I mean human “only”, not divine). The Gospel writers were trying to tell people about Jesus and who He really was. Why would they leave room for speculation?
