Mary's role in the Descent of Holy Spirit

I read a post one Protestant wrote that said the Descent of the Holy Spirit was the moment where the disciples became priests. He said the Catholic Church is wrong to not allow woman priests because Mary was made a Priest during the Descent. Any thoughts?

Interesting…this same person probably would deny she is the theotokos, but affirms she is a priest…

No, Mary was NOT a priest…but she IS the theotokos…

There is NO record in the Bible [and, PLEASE, DO say this to your Protestant friend! ] that Mary acted as a priest in any occasion.
If she were a priest, wouldn’t she have to?

Jesus could easily have chosen women disciples as Apostles, He was very “feminist” for His time… However, when it comes to the priesthood, He chose not to…who is going to argue with Him?

We can only do as He instructed us to…nothing more, nothing less

And, she consented!

And, the Universe has never been the same since!

All of Creation, nature included, was transformed by His LOVE and MERCY!

She is probably the best human that EVER existed, and THE enemy of the Evil One…

Mother of God…some Christians accept Mary as the mother of Jesus, but not as the mother of God…

which is a little odd because Jesus’ human and divine natures cannot be divided like that…

If He is God, and Mary is His mother…Oh, well…

It is true that every validy baptized Christian is a priest. This is why we can say grace before meals, bless those who sneeze, and recall our baptism with holy water, etc. The universe is orderly vertically: The Christian Faithful, the Diakonite, the Presbyter, and the Episcopal. Women have an option men do not have. That option is biological motherhood. Beyond this; because of the virtue of the Virgin Mary, every woman is a spiritual mother to all. This is especially true if woman becomes a consecrated virgin, which is an option open to all women who are widowed and/or not married. So, the roles we fufill are decided by God and not by the logic of mankind. Just as a man can never be a consecrated virgin a woman can never be an ordained deacon, priest, or bishop.

A good lesson is the Burning Bush. The virtue of the Blessed Mother burns so purely that she is the vessel through which God speaks in the world. She is the Burning Bush. Understand her closeness to the Lord, marked by her freely choosing to allow the Father to share her flesh with the Son. This love between Mother and Son cannot be contained so much so that it was manifested even before her own birth.

As far as becoming priests. Jesus directly initiated that. It can said that every priest has basically been touched by someone who was touched by Jesus; like a 2000 year game of electricity.

I am a Catholic too but I don’t know that much. I believe when Jesus told them that they are lose the binds etc. is when he was making them priests. Protestants like to think of the flame of tongues. I was in their group for a while before I finally came back after exhausting my self and starving for truth.
I heard a simple homily on this once and don’t know all the scripture, as I don’t quote it any more. A priest one time explained it as Jesus had always took the apostles out fishing and casting the nets, catching some and having storms.
Then when Jesus resurrected and visited them and walked among them, he took them down to the shore where the boat was again. There in the nets were the fish allready , they were full and they hadn’t even been out. He was trying to say they were ready.

The Catechism confirms that we are all made part of the common priesthood; "Christ, high priest and unique mediator, has made of the Church “a kingdom, priests for his God and Father.” The whole community of believers is, as such, priestly. The faithful exercise their baptismal priesthood through their participation, each according to his own vocation, in Christ’s mission as priest, prophet, and king. Through the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation the faithful are “consecrated to be . . . a holy priesthood.” (CCC 1546).

Jesus also gave us the ministerial priesthood, our Ordained Priests. “The ministerial or hierarchical priesthood of bishops and priests, and the common priesthood of all the faithful participate, “each in its own proper way, in the one priesthood of Christ.” While being “ordered one to another,” they differ essentially. In what sense? While the common priesthood of the faithful is exercised by the unfolding of baptismal grace --a life of faith, hope, and charity, a life according to the Spirit–, the ministerial priesthood is at the service of the common priesthood. It is directed at the unfolding of the baptismal grace of all Christians. **The ministerial priesthood is a means by which Christ unceasingly builds up and leads his Church. **For this reason it is transmitted by its own sacrament, the sacrament of Holy Orders.” (CCC 1547).

Here is some reading to affirm Mary’s involvement in all. The descent of the spirit actually came upon Mary when the angel visited her and she said yes.
The Holy Spirit began the work of the Incarnation. As the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, Mary became the Mother of God become Man. That was the beginning. Some thirty-three years intervened then the purpose of that first coming of the Holy Spirit on Our Lady was finally fulfilled when He actually descended and the term we should use descended on the Church and has been descending ever since. I’ve checked my sources - one Pope after another for centuries back says it was because Mary was with those people in Jerusalem.

Mary was already filled with the Holy Spirit, according to Gabriel in Luke’s Gospel.

However, this is irrelevant.

I would also wonder why it had to be Pentecost? All the Apostles received the Holy Spirit directly from Jesus on Easter Sunday (that evening, according to John 20:19-22) 50 days prior to Pentecost. They were even given a Sacramental Authority at this time, the authority to forgive sins in Jesus’ Name.

I think this occurred this way because Pentecost is parallel to the Jewish feast of Shavuot, fifty days after Passover. On Shavuot, Jews celebrate the giving of the Law to Israel; the parallel is the giving of the Spirit to the Church, fifty days after Easter.

I know its a little bit off topic, but there are so many similarities between these two Pentecost, in addition to the one you mentioned.

The Jewish Pentecost was the first after Israel was freed from slavery to Egypt.
The Christian Pentecost was the first after Jesus freed us from slavery to Sin.

At the Jewish Pentecost, 3000 Israelites died at the hands of the Levites (the OT priesthood).
At the Christian Pentecost, 3000 Jews died to themselves and were reborn in the Spirit at the hands of the Disciples (the NT priesthood).

And another similarity that is further off topic.
At Babel, mankind was scattered all over the earth and given different speech.
At Pentecost, Jews from all over the earth came and were able to understand the Disciples no matter what their language was. The 1st Christian Pentecost un-did what happened at Babel.

Oh, got it. On the evening of Easter Sunday, Jesus passed on the authority of the Sacrament of Penance, sealing this authority with the gift of the Holy Spirit.

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you."*** 20 ****** When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.****** 21 *** (Jesus) said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you."*** 22 *** And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the holy Spirit.*** 23 *** Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."

On Pentecost, Jesus fulfilled His Promise to the Apostles that He gave in John He promised that the Holy Spirit will be with the Apostles (and hence, the Church) as the teach and preach the Gospel!

John 16:13 -But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming.

John 14:26 - The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name–he will teach you everything and remind you of all that (I) told you.
