Mary's song: "My soul magnifies the Lord..."

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

When praying the “Our Father” and thinking of how Mary first heard those words taught by Jesus, it was hard for me to get beyond the Humility of God’s first two words: “Our Father”…

Today, as I prayed Mary’s song of Joy even before she “saw” the Face of her Son —
or heard His Voice as the Word Made Flesh, I could hardly get beyond the humility of our Mother’s first words, in reply to Elizabeth’s praise, calling her “Mother of my Lord” and telling Mary: “blessed is she who believed…” And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the the Lord…”

How incredibly beautiful God has created our Mother, to be a perfect example for us! She does not receive the praise of anyone but immediately gives all praise to God. In her humility we can learn, God is the life of her soul, and holding Him within her womb she knows His marvelous work is shining from her and is magnified for all time…

“My spirit rejoices in God, my Savior. He looks on his servant in her lowliness, henceforth all ages will call me blessed…”

Let me stop here, but I encourage anyone who wants to appreciate Mary more, who wants to do as the disciple John did at the foot of the Cross, and obediently take her into their lives, to ponder her beauty as the beauty God gave her and as an example to all His Holy Church. May we seek to be perfected as Mary is, in His Love.

Let us say our own “Yes” to Him and then go with haste to share Him, to magnify Him. May He shine through us as He does in Mary.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the Magnificat is beautiful. Pope Emeritus (Benedict XVI) called the Magnificat, “Mary’s self-portrait”.

Out of the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks, and Mary’s words in Luke 1: 46-55 give us a “picture” of who she is. What will it be like to “see” her in heaven! Just beautiful – indescribably beautiful – as she magnifies the Lord!

Mary was/ is the most beautiful Mother of all. What all I could say about Her would just be too long for this board. If only more women and girls looked to Her as their role model.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, a thousand times, “Yes” : Mary was/ is and ever will be the most beautiful of all human persons God created – and we have yet to see her in all the glory God has given her in heaven.

Women, young and old, have in Mary a unique model as the feminine counterpart for the masculine but every man woman and child have in Mary both Mother and Model. When Mary was given to us by Jesus from His Cross, John took her into his life and John learned from her, how to follow Jesus more perfectly as His Disciple. All of us can do the same by God’s Grace.

O Jesus, living in Mary, come and live in your servants, in the spirit of holiness, in the fullness of your power, in the perfection of your ways, in the truth of your virtues, in the communion of your mysteries. Rule over every adverse power, in your Spirit, for the glory of the Father. Amen. (Prayer of Fr. Olier)
