That’s what the Magisterum is for. Truth doesn’t change. The Holy Spirit guides and protects the Church and the office of St. Peter, like you’ll been told. But you seem to lack belief. The Church doesn’t reinvent the wheel. It safeguards the Truth passed down through the ages. If a person of the Hierarchy contradicts the Magisterum then you don’t follow him, just like Saints have said. Why are you so puzzled? It’s easy.
It’s an easy reply, but not an answer. You did not answer the question. As I stated, you and others may not posses the ability to answer. That’s fine, but instead of trying to dance around the question, just say you don’t know. Because as your reply indicates, the Magisterum has never changed. It was written once with the truth and now that truth is passed down through the ages. Nothing has ever been added. Nothing has ever been altered. It is as it was in its original state. It will never change. It will never be added to. Seriously, do you expect me to believe that? If you are saying that it can never be altered or added to, then yes, I guess your answer was appropriate. BUT, if is can be added to or altered, then it takes me back to my original question and you have no answered it.

Actually that is not what was said. What was said is that Truth never changes. Members of Magisterum change as the old die and new bishops are ordained. What the Church teaches, she teaches because it is the Truth.

No, because that was not what was stated.

Truth cannot change. How it is taught and explained can change. Specific prohibitions can change, like “no meat on Fridays”, but not the Truth. So, if some day, and that day has not yet arrived, Masons no longer hold to those things that bar Catholics from participating, then this prohibition could be lifted.

I just called a long time friend of our family who is a priest. And discussed with him this entire discussion here on Catholic Answers, the Pope and infallibility, the Magisterium, the acceptance of Church teaching on faith and morals, and membership in the Masons. His response, much of what you say here is inaccurate. That you do not have an accurate understanding of the Magisterium (it can be changed, added to and altered, while rare, there are instances), that he does not even see an issue with membership in the Masons and knows there are Catholics in it and feels while it was anti-Catholic at one-time, that was a long time ago and more a function of the feeling of the individual members at the time, and not official policy of the organization. That there are certain conditions that have to exist for the statements of the popes on Masonry to be infallible and they do not exist in these instances. He said that since I do not know the qualifications of those posting here, I have no idea if the statements are accurate. He said if this website and those offering opinions are not directly sponsored and supported by the Church, then they cannot speak officially for the Church. He suggested that I, in his words, “turn the channel”. What a breath of fresh air. So I will take his advice. Click

Yeah right.
This is the official declaration: Period!

Issued by the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on November 26, 1983.

It has been asked whether there has been any change in the Church’s decision in regard to Masonic associations since the new Code of Canon Law does not mention them expressly, unlike the previous code.

This Sacred congregation is in a position to reply that this circumstance is due to an editorial criterion which was followed also in the case of other associations likewise unmentioned in as much as they are contained in wider categories.

Therefore the Church’s negative judgment in regard to Masonic associations remains unchanged since their principles have always been considered irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church and therefore membership in them remains forbidden. The faithful who enroll in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion.
It is not within the competence of local ecclesiastical authorities to give a judgment on the nature of Masonic associations which would imply a derogation from what has been decided above, and this in line with the Declaration of this Sacred Congregation issued on February 17, 1981 (cf. AAS 73 [1981] pp. 240-241).

In an audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect, the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II approved and ordered the publication of this Declaration which had been decided in an ordinary meeting of this Sacred Congregation.

Rome, from the Office of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, November 26, 1983.

Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Prefect

Jerome Hamer, OP, Titular Archbishop of Loria, Secretary

Hmmm, you would think being a “Catholic Priest” and all, that your friend would know that Catholics are bound by canon law. Strange that he missed that point. Perhaps his Bishop needs to be informed before this Priest does more damage to souls.

I think this is the answer for beischel: Find someone who agrees with you. Since some people here won’t agree then he is never going to be satisfied. :banghead:

Masonry is not Anti-Catholic.
Rubbish, and absurd. The nature of the lodge, with its oaths - the very nature of its association, is de facto anti-Catholic. That it only dares to bewail Catholicism when the climate is ripe or where the trend is popular is of no consequence, and secondary to the fact.
Some Masons may be [anti-Catholic].
Some ? Oh, come now, really ? Some ? My grandmother still has uncomfortable memories of the Orange Day parades, which she immediately associates with i) Freemasonry, and ii) anti-Catholicism. She is not a Catholic, mind you, but she is as sharp as a tac. Such parades, admittedly, were from but a generation ago here in Canada, and are no longer celebrated (thank God), but they do evince themselves of disproving your implication that anti-Catholicism is but a minor phenomenon within Masonry.
Popes have been Anti-Masonic.
All Popes always have been “Anti-Masonic.” The condemnations of Masonry came from principles of Masonry that are contrary to the Faith, which is everlasting. St Peter could not condemn Freemasonry as Freemasonry, as we know it today, was not known to him then. No Pope has ever withdrawn a single condemnation of the Masons.
Some Catholics are.
Catholics have a duty to be “Anti-Masonry” as such, though Masons - knowing enough of our religion - know full well that this will tend to dispute, arguments, frustrations, etc., and not violence, which is forbidden us. Again, Catholics have a duty to oppose Masonry, for many reasons, not the least for jeopardizing the souls of so many good men.
It seems to me that this is all very divisive.
When I was young, someone once challenged me that oil and water will not mix, and so I attempted to disprove it by stirring the two vigorously. In my frustration, I cursed the oil for not mixing with the water. This, of course, was silly, because oil and water do not mix ; however, what’s even more silly than this is saying that the fact oil and water do not mix is “all very divisive,” and for that reason we should condemn the obvious truth and reality.

Catholicism and Masonry do not mix, and stirring them about will not change that fact, though it may appear to for a while.
We’re not allowed to have these discussions within the lodge. Thank God.
Thank God ? You are silenced from speaking about those things most singularly important to the salvation of souls of your so-called brethren, and gagged so as to be unable to share with them the live-saving Faith of Christ, and you thank God for this ? Surely, you thank the wrong person, for all of God’s witnesses confessed Him even when such confessing cost them their lives.

Let me be frank : if your putrid lodge in its perfery fails to permit any member to bear witness to and profess Christ then it at once serves the devil, and not God.

Pax,
Tim

Historical Context:

Anderson’s Constitutions was written in 1723. Pope Clement XII’s encyclical condemning freemasonry was published in 1738.

Freemasonry is the product of the enlightenment. It was founded on the idea of unifying religious men on the core principals of all religions. Enlightenment thinkers were members of the lodge including Voltaire, Locke, Franklin, and Washington. Masonry proliferated and grew because the enlightenment was having an effect on a public who were increasingly believing that differences in religion were not worth killing each other over and that a civil society would be best served by men working together rather than quibbling and warring over dogma.

This was also the period where the Inquisition was in full force. The church routinely sponsored torture and executed heretics. After Eminenti, Freemasonry was deemed heresy. The Spanish Grand Inquisitor was dispatched and many masons were tortured and jailed for their crime of belief in freedom of religion.

Is it any wonder that irregular lodges formed and plotted against the church. Also, do we as Catholics believe that this particular plotting was a bad thing? The truth is that freedom religion was anathema to maintaining the church’s power and freemasonry was seen as a threat and in reality it was. So is a Papal encyclical issued in this historical context relevant. I think not.

This period was extraordinary in its fiction, civil treatises, and scientific advances. Locke Voltaire, Newton, Franklin were great men and all of our lives are better for their having lived. Freemasons all.

It is also important to note that the founding documents of the United States are very consistent with the belief in freemasonry.

I am an American Catholic.
I don’t not condemn my church for its institutional atrocities nor for heinous acts of individual members.
I believe in freedom of religion and that men have a right to pursue religion to the dictates of their own conscience I believe this to the core of my being…
I believe in good will toward and engagement with all men no matter their religion.
I believe that our American System of Government is exceptional and it is completely consistent with the beliefs of freemasonry.
Freemasonry values honesty, faithfuness, temperance, charity, consistency, responsibility and honor. Surely there are no quibbles with these.
I am a Freemason.

The modern condemnation is based on masonry “promoting indifferentism.” It is a very large leap to say that because we masons pray together that we are believers in some Masonic Religion that believes that all religions are equal. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am more involved in my faith since I have been associated with freemasonry.

There is a faulty underlying assumptions to all Church condemnations of Freemasonry. This assumption is that it is a “top down” organization like the Church that teaches some religious relativism. It is not. It encourages men to be active in their OWN faiths.

I’ve done nothing at the lodge that is in conflict with the teachings of my church.

I believe that the Canon Law of the church no longer condemns freemasons. It condemns Catholics who belong to secret societies that plot against the church. Freemasonry does neither.

Therefore the Church’s negative judgment in regard to Masonic association remains unchanged since their principles have always been considered irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church and therefore membership in them remains forbidden. The faithful who enrol in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion.

Above is the last condemnation of freemasonry by the Church. It is based on the flawed assumption listed above. “their principles have always been considered irreconcilable with the doctrine of the church.” The only principles that freemasonry values are the ones I listed above. Freemasons are free to pursue their own religions beliefs.

In closing, I cite the Chinon Parchment. This is a document that was discovered misfiled in the Vatican Archives. It clearly exonerates the Knights Templar of the charges against them. Even so, Pope Clement V disbanded the Order. He did so because King Phillip the Fair of France was deeply indebted to the Templars and wanted them disbanded. To maintain peace Pope Clement V allowed the slaughter of innocent men and most famously Jacques De Molay to be burned at the stake.

We need to be discerning and use the brains God gave us. He gave them to us for a reason. Reason.

God Bless.

Beischel is apparently trying to flame members of this forum who are faithful to the Magisterium. He uses almost every anti-catholic point in the book. All his posts exude disingenuity and blatant lack of good will. Did it ever occur to him that if the 3rd Secret is indeed about corruption in the Church, certain positions held by his long-time family friend priest could be a reflection of that? A priest holding heretical views is not unheard of. And yes beischel, I’m now convinced that you indeed came out (did you?) of Freemasonry with your Faith intact. In your signature ,next to “Religion”, it should read: RC questioning everything the Church holds true yet takes everything Freemasonry has to say at face value. Good luck with that.

I’m afraid much of what he says is not accurate and one can always find a misinformed priest these days. It does not matter whether teaching is infallible; one must still accept it. As Vatican II teaches us: “This religious submission of mind and will must be shown in a special way to the authentic magisterium of the Roman Pontiff, even when he is not speaking ex cathedra; that is, it must be shown in such a way that his supreme magisterium is acknowledged with reverence, the judgments made by him are sincerely adhered to, according to his manifest mind and will. His mind and will in the matter may be known either from the character of the documents, from his frequent repetition of the same doctrine, or from his manner of speaking.” (Lumen Gentium, chapter 3)
The restriction imposed by the CDF regarding Masonic membership still exists and that is inescapable. It would overrule the advice given by any junior member of the clergy.

We need to be discerning and use the brains God gave us. He gave them to us for a reason. Reason.
Thank you for further showing why Catholics are forbidden to become Masons as declared by eight different Popes and reaffirmed by later Popes and the Sacred Congregation For The Doctrine Of Faith (headed at the time by the current Pontiff). Which, if you’d paid attention to previous posts would see declared that canon law still to this day forbids association and leaves one in grave sin unable to recieve Holy communion.

Not only are you wrong, whether you are just speaking out in ignorance or purposely being deceptive, you show that those Masons claiming to be Catholics that come on this board hold a higher allegiance to the Lodge then to Jesus Christ and His Church. Yes Jesus gave us reason. He also left us a Church to guide, protect and safeguard the well being of our souls. You’ve only regurgitated what ever other Masonic apologist that has come on these boards has said. You claim to know better then the Popes and Bishops throughout history, and to this day, on this subject. You have made them out to be liars therefore you have made Christ to be a liar who said, “whoever hears you hears me”.
Masons on here are very quick to hurl insults at the Church, the body of Christ, to justify any association with it’s enemy, Freemasonry. You cannot serve two masters.

Perhaps you should research former Mason, now Faithful Catholic, John Salza’s work on this subject. He sheds light on what Mason’s on here don’t want to hear or are purposely holding back in an attempt to promote and sugar coat “the craft”.

It does indeed promote indifference… as a previous Masonic poster claimed he is forbidden to promote his Faith in the lodge, this in an attempt to show Masonry is not a religion. Even though many past famous Masons have affirmed it is indeed a religion. So someone in the lodge is lying. Either you are lying or being lied to. And we know who the father of lies is!
Shine the light of Jesus in the windowless temples and scatter the darkness that has clouded the reason of so many!

Let me quote a previous Faithful Catholic who summed it up perfectly:
“if your putrid lodge in its perfery fails to permit any member to bear witness to and profess Christ then it at once serves the devil, and not God.”

Disassociate from the lodge, repent, go to confession. And seeks God’s mercy for attempting to lead Catholics on this board, and in your life, astray.

Frankly I am absolutely horrified by the fact that Catholics are actively disobeying their Mother - the church and swearing oaths in Masonic lodges and temples. It’s a complete scandal. I know it must be hard to lose your influence and status but the soul is worth more than anything

Essentially every government job and most private sector employers bar proselytizing on the job. Does that mean they also “serve the devil”?

So now belonging to a secret social club that requires you to swear secret oathes to who knows who, on pain of death if they are revealed, is equivalent to a job that you are being paid to work?

So now belonging to a secret social club that requires you to swear secret oathes to who knows who, on pain of death if they are revealed, is equivalent to a job that you are being paid to work?
I’m just going by the criteria you seem to set, wherein the problem was restrictions upon witnessing, not secret oaths

. . . I want an answer and maybe it is not something you have the knowledge to answer. The question is, IF the Third Secret of Fatima is evil and corruption in the Church, and no one questions Church statements on matters of faith or morals, and the corrupted Church makes invalid statements of faith and morals, if no one here will question said corrupted statements on faith and morals, aren’t we then simply abetting the propagation of corruption and evil in the Church?

It’s not a question of whether or not you believe in the Our Lady of Fatima - obviously Pope John Paul II did, so if he believed I will believe it. So if he interpreted the 3rd secret incorrectly, and if the 3rd secret is indeed about the coming (maybe already here, who knows) of evil and corruption in the Church as many Catholic writers have revealed, then how can the faithful oppose it if everything is accepted without question. It may just be a philosophical question you are incapable of answering. It is quite puzzling to me, hence why I asked it.
Although the poster has left us I thought I’d address this post with which there are some difficulties:
  1. This question presumes that the Third Secret of Fatima is about “evil and corruption in the Church.” We have no rational reason to believe this, however, given that the Third Secret, as released by the Vatican and confirmed by Sister Lucia, apparently isn’t about “evil and corruption in the Church,” but is an apocalyptic vision indicating that Papacy or the Church will suffer at the hands of secular forces. This is certainly how John Paul viewed it, seeing*his own attempted murder as a manifestation of it.
  2. Even if there is more to the Third Secret than the Vatican has admitted to, and even if it is about “evil and corruption in the Church,” there is no reason for a Catholic to mistrust the infallible authority of the Magisterium because …
a) The mere presence of “evil and corruption” in the Church does not negate the Church’s infallible teaching authority. You make a mistake in equating these two things. Catholics believe that the Magisterium of the Church is infallible (i.e., unable to teach error); we do not believe that it is impeccable (i.e., immune from human corruption or sin). So, even if the Pope and all the cardinals were outright devil worshippers, Christ and the Holy Spirit would still remain faithful to what was Divinely established and would still not allow the Pope to teach a formal error or to lead the faithful into heresy; therefore, “evil and corruption” are not to be equated with untrustworthy teaching authority, since it is Christ, and no human agent, Who maintains the Papacy in infallible orthodoxy. Thus, even if there is “evil and corruption” in the highest levels of the Magisterium, a Catholic has no right or reason to question or oppose the formal teaching of the Church, since Christ Himself guarantees its infallibility (e.g. John 14:16-17 & 16:13, Matt 16:18-19, etc.).

b) Fatima is merely a private revelation (which is not formally binding on the faithful), whereas Papal Infallibility is a dogma (which is formally binding on the faithful). So, if it came down to a choice between them, a faithful Catholic would have to choose the dogma over the private revelation. IOW, if the Third Secret of Fatima made the claim that the Papacy would become evil and corrupt so as to teach errors, then this would render the private revelation of Fatima (or at least this Third Secret) unworthy of belief, since it would conflict with binding Sacred Tradition and a dogmatic truth of the Catholic Faith.

When I hear Masonic conspiracy theories coming from Catholics, it is almost always associated with anti semiticism, so it is far from harmless. What is the official Catholic position on Masonic conspiracy theories?
What?

The antisemitism aspect is a diversion. It’s deception. There is no connection between Jewish people and Masonic-satanism, and those who try to merge these things are doing so injustly.

Thou shall not bear false witness against his neighbor.
