This thread was deleted for some reason with no explanation, so I’ll try again. Is touching oneself DURING sex or as foreplay to sex that finishes in the normal way o.k.? For example, if a wife is doing it during sex to assist in climax or a couple does it as a prelude to regular vaginal sex? I don’t see why it wouldn’t be permitted within the context of licit marital sex. The catechism seems to put masturbation strictly in the context of pleasing oneself outside of the marital act, which this is not. Thanks for the responses.

Yes I believe so, absolutely fine.

I imagine the thread was deleted because of how sexually explicit it is. This is probably a question best asked in a more private context.

Hi LaSainte,

I can’t give you a definitive answer, but my basic instinct would be that since the marital exchange is mutual, that this action, if not exchanged, would be at least questionable. As an exchanged action within a context of marriage relations, it is licit. Consider asking it of an apologist as a private question.

God Bless,
Joan

Hi LaSainte!

This topic comes up very often on these forums. Here is the bottomline: There is nothing wrong with using manual or oral stimulation as foreplay during sex in a married relationship. So, like you said, as long as it is done with the intent to finish in regular vaginal intercourse, that is fine, as the act is still open to life.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the responses so far! I have seen much more explicit threads on this site than this one. I kept it as clean as possible for the question, but I have seen plenty of masturbation threads here that were as or more explicit. I hope I haven’t broken any rules?

It’s best if the husband is doing it for the wife. But , if for some reason he cannot help her reach a climax then it is permissible for her to assist in the process. Of course this must be in the context of a marital act. And the husband if he is physically capable ,with the assistance of his spouse needs to learn to satisfy his wife himself.

Yes, why? Sometimes couples like to mix things up a little. It’s not a question of what the husband is or is not able to do for his wife, but if this would be permissible as an occasional form of foreplay or something to accompany the act itself, not through absolute necessity but for fun, the way oral sex as foreplay is something some couples enjoy on occasion, but not always.

It is my understanding that if the act of vaginal sex has completed, and the wife has not climaxed, the husband may help her climax. I believe that the main reason this is allowed is because it can help her to become pregnant.

Okay, I’ll be nice. We know that in Catholicism you should be married and open to procreation to engage in sex. We also know that you should be respectful of your spouse and the process of life creation. Most intimate activities done together between married people who love each other will be fine.
People who object to specific acts performed within the stated rules are either misinformed, or are attempting to enforce their own personal views on others. It is possible that those people could not engage in some of the acts discussed here and elsewhere and meet the requirements of marital relations that Catholicism teaches. But that does not mean others could not.

There is a rational expectation both within religious systems and secular society that individuals use their powers of reason and their individual conscience to recognize right from wrong. That is to acertain and take correct actions. And to avoid incorrect and wrong ones. There are a large number of people here who seem to want exact instructions on every aspect of life from some higher religious authority. This seems to me to be a complete abandoning of personal responsibility and reason. It is bad to conduct either ones religious life or ones life as a citizen with the expectation of exact rules for all occasions and circumstances. Life does not work that way. You have to think for yourself and listen to the moral voice inside you.
Ask if you are truly confused. But looking for exact answers to every ethical and moral question from Rome is in my view a poor policy. Try trusting yourself. As long as you are acting within the actually proscribed rules, you should make choices acceptable to your faith.

There are far more explicit threads on here. Heck, there is one about anal sex going on right now. The thread was likely deleted because the first person who responded to the OP called it an “idiotic question”.

If you say so. I’ve glanced at the anal sex discussion and the language doesn’t seem as explicit as on this one, though this sort of judgment is rather subjective.

Anyway, I’m new here and don’t yet have the best sense of what the moderators consider appropriate. I haven’t reported anyone, just suggested maybe this could be crossing a line.
