Mass and missing Mass Due to Injury?

Got a question regarding Mass.

I haven’t been to mass in three weeks do to a severe grade three ankle sprain. I dislocated my ankle almost to the point of fracture and tore all the ligaments on the outside of my ankle and foot.I am in a cast and not allowed to drive. I know no one at the church I attend since I am so new there and my MIL also goes with me to mass, but she doesn’t drive and has no friends. My wife is unable to drive us since she has difficulty with our daughter. She has MS and isn’t able to take the baby in and out of the car.

Am I somehow excused from Mass or am “in trouble” somehow because I am unable to attend Mass due to a circumstance outside of my control?

It doesn’t have to be a sunday when they bring the eucharist to you. They told me the day the priest comes, he will confess me and then offer me the eucharist.

My wife might have something to say about them bringing me the Eucharist and a priest confessing me in the home. She is still anti-Catholic and Church tradition, so this might not be a good thing to have happen at this time.

If you can’t go, you can’t go. Obviously, Mass is not the only thing that is keeping you at home, after all, is it?

You can go online and read the readings (the USCCB web site has them) and perhaps witness a broadcast Mass on the radio or on TV. It makes no difference in meeting your obligation–there is no obligation to watch a Mass on TV when that is “all you have”–but doing something to mark the day does make a difference to you.

If you call your parish, BTW, they usually can’t find you a ride, but they often can send someone to bring you Holy Communion. If you will still be laid up next Sunday, call the parish right away and see if you can arrange to get Holy Communion until you can get back to Mass. (This is according to the age-old practice of the Church, BTW.)

Bodily incapacity is a valid exemption from Mass attendance. If you can’t get there, that’s it, full stop.

(If you were to acquire a bilocational body, however, all bets would be off!)

I missed this. Explain this to the parish staff; they may have someone who’ll give you a ride. If it will be too much for you to go, though, you have a valid reason to miss Mass. Don’t beat yourself up. Concentrate on getting better.

Your injury may take a while to heal. You should call the church rectory and ask for a Eucharistic Minister to bring you communion until you are able to get around either on your own or with an access a ride. The priest will come to see you first before a EM is assigned to bring you communion. God bless you for a speedy recovery.

The church rectory may have a listing of parishioners who are able to pick up fellow parishioners at their home for Mass and the return home. God bless.

If you injured and cannot get to Mass, then that is just the way it is sometimes. The obligation does not apply to people who are sick, injured or simply cannot get there because of weather or because they are too old.

If having someone bring you the eucharist is a problem for your wife then call and let your church know. They can ask the priest what you can do. He may say you can stay home (if you cant get a ride) until you get better and then you just go to confession.

NOT sure about this its just a thought. Just want to encourage you to call your church.

You aren’t just sitting home because you can’t be bothered to go to Mass. You are physically incapable of getting there.

Certainly call the parish (or email) and see what options you have. You don’t have to have an EMHC come if it will cause problems. There is no obligation to receive communion more than once a year. The obligation to attend at Mass does not apply if you are physically incapable.

However, it may make you feel better to speak to someone IRL about your situation.
