Mass at the beach?

If you’re going to say YES to Fr Fred having a beach mass then how on earth can you say no to the volcano wedding? Think about it…too much romanticizing about this.

I’ve been to retreats. They always arrange mass in a chapel setting, then they might have a Bible study or meditation time outside.

I don’t think having a family next to me (it IS a public area and you can’t chase people away) grilling hot dogs and cranking out heavy metal is condusive to mass and not one person can give a VALID reason WHY on earth mass needs to be celebrated this way. The church did not burn down, there is no emergency, and I wonder if the Bishop even knows about it. I seriously cannot picture any Bishop saying this is OK.
If anyone is planning a volcano wedding, they better hope the thing doesn’t erupt while the wedding is in progress.

OK well I see that people are going to INSIST on saying that a bikini beach with music blaring and people walking around as an appropriate place for mass. It’s continually being compared to oppressed people sneaking Mass in the woods, guest visits by the Pope to other countries, and soldiers in war who have no other recourse. Jesus ate a fish breakfast on the beach after his resurrection with his disciples, He did not celebrate “communion” there. Unless you’re arguing that we should serve fish at mass???

If all this proof texting, poor examples, things taken out of context are correct then I am the happiest woman on this planet. I can finally have my wedding mass by the volcano at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. I will simply print off this whole sorry post with all these wimpy, lame, and out of context examples and present them as my “argument” to the Bishop. I’m sure he will be won over by the amazing and theologically rich examples presented here as it’s so convincing and gives such appropriate examples.

Using these intelligent, albeit, out of context examples, I can certainly have my wedding poolside with bikini clad ladies sipping on tropical beverages, grill going, and music playing, and a lifeguard occasionally (but softly) blowing his whistle. How exiting! If a solider can have mass in a battlefield, and Blessed John Paul II can say mass in the woods during communist oppression, and Jesus ate a “fish breakfast” on the beach then I should be able to have a “volcano” wedding in Vegas outside the hotel.

I am sure the Bishop will be totally impressed with the intellect and rationalization of these arguments so I’m going to spring like a panther to my keyboard and make sure he gets this thread emailed to him right away so he can “be rational” and approve it, after all, “there’s nothing wrong with it” because people in dire circumstance do it all the time. Gotcha. Besides it is a dire circumstance, I will just “die” if I don’t have my nuptial mass poolside.

I can’t wait, anyone want to attend my “volcano mass wedding?” I can just see the lovely white bows on the lawn chairs and the altar servers in Bermuda shorts carrying tiki torches as they light the candles on the tiki bar that will double as the altar of my Lord.

I hear they make the volcano erupt nice and loud at the moment you’re pronounced husband and wife. And don’t give me your theologizing because you have made it clear, mass can be celebrated anywhere because oppressed, war-time, soldiers, Catholics in hiding, and visiting Popes do it all the time.

I’ve never been happier in my life–this is the single greatest conversion experience I’ve ever had as Catholic. I am going to see if we can have a parking lot Mass at Walmart because I have shopping to do and I need to have things a little more convenient than driving to church for a silly reason like having mass indoors. I love the outdoors don’t you?

Bring on Vegas!

Wow! :rotfl:

The problem would be whether this is the logical conclusion. It’s the bald man argument.

Anyway, I think you’re using too many straw man arguments. I don’t think anyone on this forum is arguing for a bikini-clad, loud secular music Mass. Instead, they are saying that (all things being equal) a Mass at the beach would be an okay location for a Mass provided that the bishop gave his permission and that all other liturgical practices were followed (use of corporal, proper liturgical attire, etc.)
Obviously if the Bishop says its OK then they can procede, I thought this was “should I go because it doesn’t seem right” thread. Just because we can doesn’t mean we should. But I have not heard that the Bishop has approved. And if he does then what does he say to Aunt Millie who wants her nuptual mass in the rose garden? That’s why I’m curious if the Bishop has said yes.

If you’re on a public beach tell me how you stop that? Are you going to tell the family that shows up with their cooler and boom box they must be quiet while you have mass? I know what I would have told you 2 years ago.

Again, let’s be charitable. The priest would hopefully find a spot on the beach that is quiet and peaceful (and there are plenty of them. If you’ve been to the beach on vacation, you’ve probably never seen one, but if you live near the beach or are familiar with a beach, you know there are plenty of quiet, peaceful places). I also cannot fathom a family coming onto the beach, seeing something going on, and not being respectful.

Really? You know this? Did you ask him?

I talked with one of my Bishop’s pastors who I work for. We discuss these kind of things. My Bishop does not allow this. A Mass, not in a church, is to be a real necessity, and is decided on a case by case basis. He would not be given permission to go to the beach with youth and say Mass. Like I said, this would not be something my Bishop would give permission for.

So a question to all those who don’t agree with mass outdoors:

If you could have the chance, knowing what you know now, would you have gone hiking with the young Fr Karol Wojtyla if you knew he would be saying mass on top of a canoe, or in the woods somewhere?

I don’t know, I guess it depends whether or not he’s wearing a bikini.

LOL.

You do understand that his situation was one of persecution and he probably would have used a church or chapel if one were available?

I still don’t get what all the bother is about. The existence of a church within several miles, does not mean that getting everybody there is practical. This might be the only way of assuring that everybody gets to Mass.

Jesus spent a lot of time on the lake shore. I think it’s quite apt. The ‘Mass Rocks’ were boulders or parts of the landscape that Irish priests used as alters when the church was suppressed. Some of them have actually been moved into churches and consecrated for use as the alter, which I think is a wonderful idea

While my Dad was stationed in Hawaii (he was in the Air Force) we celebrated Mass many times on the beach. It was wonderful, with the beauty of God’s creation all around us.

And I’d imagine he spent a lot of time in his bed sleeping. Should we celebrate it there too?

Can we stop looking at scripture as the only authority, when the church has already spoken quite clearly? We’re not protestants.

I mean no insult or rudness, but Jimmy, it doesn’t matter one bit what you think. The church has spoken quite clearly to us, as multiple posters have outlined above.

Well in fairness I think I have a scripture analogy and an example from tradition. Priests say ‘house masses’ all the time and there isn’t a dire need for that. Worker Priests used to say mass in factories and report many examples of people being touched by grace. When Jesus was on earth he didn’t live in a synagogue or temple he was out and about with tax collectors and sinners. Tradition is a moveable feast

Nothing wrong with it. It is fantastic.Great number of miracles took place close to the beach.👍

Really? THE CHURCH HAS SAID NO!
Why do people keep insisting that this is forbidden? Outside masses are held all the time, all around the country. The church has published guidelines as to when they are acceptable, the bishops have accepted the responsibility of interpreting those guidelines in accord with the circumstances in their own dioceses, and the masses are held with the bishops’ approval. You may wish that the bishops read these particular canons more stringently, but until you are consecrated one of them, this simply isn’t your call to make.

Redemptionis Sacramentum regarding where Mass may be celebrated:

1. The Place for the Celebration of Holy Mass
[108.] “The celebration of the Eucharist is to be carried out in a sacred place, unless in a particular case necessity requires otherwise. In this case the celebration must be in a decent place”.197 The diocesan Bishop shall be the judge for his diocese concerning this necessity, on a case-by-case basis.

The Church in it’s wisdom has given the authority to determine this to the Bishop of the diocese on a case by case basis.
This is good enough for me.

Is the Mass said in defiance of the Church, or in an obvious show of pride by the priest, to show that churches and sanctuaries and statues etc are irrelevant? Are the attendees refusing to set foot in a church, or trying to set up a new church? If not it is a great idea.

It seems that Masses take place all the time in different places, especially in a youth context. My son attended one in a barn with a gathering of about 150 kids from area parishes. I think this is a great way to celebrate Mass, especially for young people. It helps them realize that church is not just a building, it is a people, a living body.

The Liturgy of the Mass isn’t subject to our personal opinions. The local Bishop decides on a case by case basis.
