What makes me itch often is the seeming portrayal many Catholics who support Liturgical reform that everything from receiving Holy Communion on the tongue to praying in Latin to recieving under a single species is completely incorrect, and for the last 1500+ years the Church has been doing everything all wrong. Then Vatican II came along and fixed everything, and now everyone is happy (that last sentence is a quote from one of my past religion teachers). I have heard some people come very close to suggesting that the Church survived in spite of the Tridentine Mass.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist is still the Liturgy of the Eucharist; there are now more Eucharistic Prayers (as there used to be before the Council of Trent).
Actualy, the Roman Canon was the sole Eucharistic Prayer in the Latin Rite for over 1500 years.
However, our parish ahs a young woman who has entered the professed life and is now a missionary nun in an orthodox order; whe discerned her vocation while being an altar girl.
That still does not negate the fact that serving at the Altar is meant to aquaint boys with the role of the priest and eventually prepare them to take on that very role some day.
And Rome has said that it is a fuller sign of the Sacred Meal; and of course that is how Christ gave it to us, and how the early Church celebrated it.
Nowhere is it mandated that all must recieve the Precious Blood. In fact, many parishes do not offer it to the laity.

And it cannot be a “fuller sign” of the Eucharist as the Eucharist is already fully in both the Sacred Host and the Precious Blood. In my experience, the chalice is given to a lay “Eucharist Minister” who usually stands to the side, with many chances to give the impression that the Precious Blood is somehow secondary to the Sacred Host. How much better it was when the chalice was a mark of the priesthood.

And it cannot be a “fuller sign” of the Eucharist as the Eucharist is already fully in both the Sacred Host and the Precious Blood. .
Does not the fuller sign refer to the outward symbol vis a vis the definition of the sacrament? As also the fact that in the Sacred Host the Blood is only present by concomittance?

Not that I personally support Comunion in the hand but could you please recheck your Patristic quotes.

Was there no preparation for returning Catholics before going to Confession and returning to Mass and the Sacraments at your parish? We have a 6 to 8 week process that allows them to ask questions and explains the differences in the liturgy.
I never knew that even existed. I went to my Church’s website and found nothing on this.
I didnt even remember the Act of Contrition when I went to Confession. I used to know all that.
I am back and I am going to stay with the Church. I want to make this work with all my heart.

Next Sunday I will go to Church and sit one row closer. I sat in the very back my first time, feeling not worthy to sit any closer.

To be honest with all of you, and this is the truth, if it wasnt for all of you helping me here, I might have not gone.

One question about the chalice. Is it real wine? Just curious.

Yes, real wine with a little bit a of water in it.

Personally, I have always just received the Body and always on the tongue. Normally we go to a local Latin Mass but if for some reason we can’t make it we will go to a NO close buy.

I’ve always also been told all fallen away Catholics needed to do was make a good confession. I’d be willing to bet when he went to confession the priest would have told him if something else was required.

I am probably one of the people who you are directing your comment towards since my post was edited. However, I cannot stop advocating reverence. I will say it - there are grave problems in the Liturgy nowadays including Communion in the hand. My love for Traditionalism and love for a reverence Liturgy are one and the same. I cannot separate them into different forums - they are who I am.

Yes it begins before the Consecration as real wine, and becomes the Precious Blood of Christ after Consecration. Just as the Bread starts as just simple bread and becomes the Body of Christ after Consecration.

Why is communion in the hand a grave problem??

In that case, perhaps you could recuse yourself on this topic.

Outfctrl, Welcome Home! So glad you went to Confession & Mass! How awesome! I took it upon myself to call St. Joseph’s(anonymously, of course) to see if I could get some info for you. 😊 I hope you don’t mind. The Secretary ( a very sweet Lady) said that there is a program called “Landings” for people coming back to the Church. However, it is on recess for the summer, & will not be back in session until August. She did give me the names & numbers of the persons in charge. I will pm you with that. She also gave me the name of a retired Navy Chaplain(at St. Joe’s) who has helped alot of people come back to the Church after a long absence. She said that he is absolutley wonderful! I hope this will be some help to you. God Bless:)

There are a number of good books out there now that could help you since it has been so long :p.

Catholicism for Dummies by Fr. Trujillio and Fr. Brighenti (spelling on names may be wrong)

Mass Confusion by Jimmy Akin (I think)

The Mass Explained (I don’t know the author of this one)

The New Catechism of the Catholic Church (by the Catholic Church) is another good book to have on hand although you can access this one on the web if you know where to go which I don’t because I have a hard copy and don’t need to.

And of course, coming here to get your questions answered. There is a forum “ask an Apologist” where you might ask some of your questions, I would keep it brief and to only one question at a time.

I won’t answer your questions from your original post outfctl because they have been well answered.

Now, Doctrines and Dogmas have not changed but the way the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass may have changed, it is still the Mass with the un-bloody sacrifice occurring every time a Mass is said.

Let me recommend the video on the mass by Jesuit Father J. Glenn Murray. It can be found in most religious goods stores.

However, I am very disheartened when I see people trying to cling to it at the exclusion of the “new mass”. The best thing the original poster can do is to become catechized on the changes in the mass and understand why we do what we do.

I can agree partially with what you are saying here. However, the last sentence is a problem for me. Things can change from parish to parish in “how things are done”. That is the sadness I see around these parts.😦

It is real wine. Using anything else would not be Biblical.

Yes, all that is required is a good confession. However, many parishes have ReMembering Church program (or other returning Catholic program) to answer questions regarding the Catholic faith and changes to the mass, etc. These programs are not a requirement for returning but can help make the return more comfortable.

Ok, some of you know Ihave just returned to my Faith, but I am confused. The mass isnt the same anymore. Things I noticed:

Alter boys are now Alter girls and boys. ???

There used to be these bells that were held by the alterboys and rung at certain times…now I think someone presses a button…electronic. ???

I used to tap my heart at a certain time during the mass. no more. Now we hold our arms out with our palms up at certain prayers. When did this start?

Communion is handed to you by either the priest or a woman/Man while you are standing. What happened to the Priest placing it in your mouth while you are kneeling and humbling yourself?

Also, I noticed a chalice held by a woman and people drinking from it, then she would wipe it clean for the next person. What is that? I dont ever remember drinking anything.

The Gospels are shorter now with really no comments by the Priest afterwards, maybe a little. All in all, the Mass took approximately and hour. I do remember that.

Some prayers are different too.

Is there a standard format that I can become familiar with? or are all the masses different from Church to Church. I felt so out of place. I didnt know what to do half the time. I really want to make this work. I am like a different person now. I had no idea I would feel like this. It is a happy feeling deep inside I cannot explain. Things I would normally take for granted are questioned now, whether it is right or wrong. Things I used to do all the time are now considered taboo.

This journey of mine will be a hard road to follow. I am buying a rosary today and also a St. Christopher medal. I will also buy a few crucifixes for my house to help me overcome my…ahem…desires I always have. This experience has turned my whole life topsy turvy. I really want to make this work, with all my heart.

I hope I dont let Jesus down. I am a very weak person when it comes to sin. I mean, just going to the grocery store, I catch myself staring at womens attributes and checking them out. How do you control your thoughts? It is almost impossible! Its like I am sinning all the time and not realizing it before its too late.

Sorry for rambling away from the subject. I have a tendancy to do that. I just figured that all Masses are the same.

Talking to all of you helps me so much, just knowing there are others struggling like I am and support me.
Defending the Catholic Faith against Protestant heresy has had me running to the nearest Indult Mass in my Diocese.

Maybe it would help to find an “Indult” Mass near you that uses the 1962 Roman Missal like I did.

And that sounds like a subtle insult to the Mass of Paul 6th. You might want to re-read post 17…
