Question: why during mass do they not follow the missal? Sometimes the words are correct but the musical singing is not what is written in the missal?! As a protestant coming to the Catholic Church this makes it very difficult to follow.

The Mass was standardized for centuries, until the Second Vatican Council changed the language of the Mass and allowed modern languages instead of the ancient Latin.

Other changes came along, they didn’t change everything at once. 46 years after the Council ended, there are still changes coming at us.

My suggestion: lower your expectations. If you have a printed Mass guideline, follow it and pray on your own.

Vatican II was the “council of the bishops” which was meant to restore more autonomy to the local bishops. (Vatican I had declared the Pope to be infallible in matters of faith and morals.) Part of that autonomy has lead to non-standardization, and even to experimentation.

Canon law allows you to change churches if you want. don’t hesitate or be afraid to look around and see if there is another parish where you are more comfortable.

Sometimes the missalette (a “worship aid” provided in the pews at Church) will have settings for various parts of the Mass, with the musical notation. The parish (music director or priest) can choose a different setting. Anyway, since most Catholics don’t sing along and very few people read music these days, it does not even occur to most music directors that anyone will notice.

Most Mass Settings tend to be repeated throughout the course of the liturgical year (i.e.: Mass of Creation, Heritage Mass, St. Louis Jesuits’ Mass, People’s Mass, etc.) These settings have been used in Catholic parishes throughout the course of many years, and they are more than likely well-known by most parishioners. Don’t worry; when the new translation goes into effect, a lot will probably be looking in those missals.

Just a small edit: Mass settings are different music settings for the prayers of the Mass (i.e.: Gloria, Holy, Holy, Holy, Memorial Acclamation, Great Amen, Lamb of God).
